Kentucky 88 - 40 Radford (No. 2,056)

Radford University is a very lovely school that sits in the mountains of Southwestern Virginia, not very far from Virginia Tech. Number 1 Son spent about a month there this summer as part of an academic program, and the whole GoHeath family thought it was very nice. But it's not a basketball power. Radford's basketball teams -- known as the "Highlanders" -- play in the Big South Conference, and both culturally and geographically they are a long way from the Mid-Atlantic basketball tradition represented by ODU. Ken Pomeroy has them ranked as the 313th best team in Division I, and he predicted a 35-point win (84-49) for the Cats.

They actually did a little better than that, jumping out to a 27-6 lead and cruising home from there. All five UK starters scored in double digits, and the Cats held the Highlanders to 26.2 percent shooting. The Cats also out-rebounded the Highlanders 48-26.

Some folks will complain that Kentucky shouldn't play teams like Radford, but I disagree. It's a long season, and the Cats already play one of the hardest schedules in the country. On the night before Thanksgiving, I think it's great for Kentucky to have a nice easy win. The players get to have fun, the fans get to have fun, and everyone gets to relax and watch the Duke-Kansas game. For those of you who are bored tonight, don't worry -- there will be plenty of drama before the season's over.

  1. I'm just sitting down to watch this game. Rough start to the first commercial break and this made me think of another reason why a team like UK plays the Radfords of the world. UK has a true freshman point guard who has really struggled with running the half court offense. You need games like this for guys like Teague to get his confidence. Radford turned out to be good for this as they played tough defense, just couldn't score to save their lives.

Kidd-Gilchrist by the way is great. He's quickly become my favorite Wildcat on this team.
