I'm Thankful for the Lions

Most years, on Thanksgiving, I get up and watch the Macy's parade -- and then turn off the TV because I can't stand to watch the 2-8 or 3-7 or 1-9 Lions struggle against whichever opponent will beat them that year. This knocks a big hole in the afternoon, as there are no good sports until the Cowboys game at 4 P.M. But this year, we have a great game (at least on paper): the 7-3 Lions are hosting the 10-0 Packers. The Lions haven't been 7-3 on Thanksgiving since 1993, and I missed that game because I was trying to figure out what to do with a newborn son. So I am looking forward to tomorrow's game, and I'm happy to think of all the awkward family gatherings that will go more smoothly if there's a great game to watch at 12:30 P.M.

Happy Thanksgiving, America!

  1. I wonder how much drunken gunplay around Kentucky was pre-empted by all those Thanksgiving high-school-rivalry games before everybody could stay home and watch the NFL.
