If you are a country music fan and a Bon Jovi fan, then you will probably like Eric Church. He blends the late 80's rock sound of a Bon Jovi with country music and so it is sort of Jersey meets Nashville.
I never cared for Bon Jovi, but Church wrote 10 of the 11 tracks on this album and there is an earnestness to the album that is missing with a lot of music out of Nashville.
Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 1 out of 5 stars for Just OK.
this song is more interesting than about 90 percent of what i hear flipping around radio and tv or reading these reviews at the hp. so, hooray for Eric Church.
ReplyDeleteit would be cool if Eric Church followed this older brother/younger brother relationship over the course of several albums ... on future albums, he could have something about the older brother's reaction to the younger brother coming home, jealousy over how completely the parents forgive the younger brother for leaving, the recalibration of the relationship once the younger brother has started living the life that the older brother wants him to live all these years, etc.
"Homeboy" is a really fine song and is by far the best song on the album. The rest of it has its moments, but it becomes somewhat repetitive. Eric, you might be interested in the song, "Springsteen."
ReplyDeleteSmartGirl and I really liked a couple of songs off of his last album. You might check out "Sinners Like Me" and "Before She Does."
i really like how he pivoted the phrase "home boy" in different ways from verse to verse.
ReplyDeleteI liked that, too.
ReplyDeleteAnd so did Smart Girl.
