OK, so here's where we stand as the season comes down the home stretch.
1. Mayfield is the best team west of Hopkinsville, and maybe the best team west of Bowling Green. If the Cardinals win their almost-annual playoff game with Beechwood, they will repeat as state champs in Class A.
2. Murray will keep winning until it meets Owensboro Catholic in the 2A playoffs, at which point it will lose.
3. Tilghman will beat every Kentucky school it plays until it meets Louisville Central in the 3A playoffs, and that will be an interesting game.
4. I am very excited to see who will win the big district showdown in 4A between Lone Oak and Madisonville-North Hopkins. That game will take place in Lone Oak on October 21.
5. Christian County will keep winning until they play Bowling Green or Warren Central in the 5A playoffs. I really wish County would play Mayfield to determine who is the best team west of Bowling Green. But since County struggled with Lone Oak (32-27) and Fort Campbell (20-16), I am pretty confident Mayfield would roll over them without too much trouble.
6. Nothing in 6A matters, as no team from western Kentucky has a chance in the 6A playoffs. For the record, however, I believe that Mayfield, Tilghman, Christian County, Lone Oak, Madisonville-North Hopkins, and probably Murray would all win District 1 of Class 6A with ease. That has got to be one of the worst districts in the Commonwealth.
7. I am really excited about this week's showdown between 7-0 Bowling Green and 7-0 Warren Central. Although we don't normally cover Warren County, I've included that game on the list because it's just that good. In fact, this may be the very best sports rivalry in the whole state, as these teams also play epic basketball games against each other. Warren Central almost always manages to beat Bowling Green, so I will not be surprised if the Dragons win again.
8. I would love to hear Eric's views on the best way to get from Russellville to Fulton. According to Google Maps, you should take US-79 from Russellville down into Tennessee, where you link up with I-24. Then you take I-24 until you reach the Purchase Parkway, and then you take the Parkway down to Fulton. I would be very surprised if that's the route Eric would take.
Home teams listed first:
Ballard Mem. (3-4) v. Crittenden Co. (2-5)
Bowling Green (7-0) v. Warren Central (7-0)
Caldwell Co. (4-3) v. Murray (6-1)
Fort Campbell (3-4) v. Webster Co. (0-7)
Fulton City (1-6) v. Russellville (4-3)
Fulton Co. (1-6) v. Mayfield (7-0)
Graves Co. (2-5) v. Christian Co. (8-0)
Henderson Co. (4-3) v. Marshall Co. (5-2)
Hopkins Co. Cent. (1-6) v. Lone Oak (5-2)
Hopkinsville (0-7) v. Ohio Co. (6-1)
Madisonville-North Hopkins (6-1) v. Calloway Co. (3-5)
Clarksville Northeast (Tenn.) v. Paducah Tilghman (6-2)
Owensboro Catholic (7-0) v. Union Co. (3-4)
Trigg Co. (5-2) v. Heath (3-4)
Here's hoping that the ongoing Country Ham Festival in Cadiz dulls the Trigg County Wildcats' competitive spirit.
ReplyDeleteWKDZ 106.5 FM "Friday Night Blitz" coverage of the Heath-Trigg County game starts at 6 Central today.
ReplyDeleteGiven that most recently played listing, however, I'll be on WKDZ's AM sister station, Oldies1480.com.
ReplyDeleteUntil "Blitz" time, I mean.
ReplyDelete8. Thank you so much for asking, as, of course, that route is utter jive.
ReplyDeleteThis is actually quite an easy choice. It's a fantastic route (old U.S. 68/Ky. 80 across southwestern Kentucky is as interesting and beautiful a road as there is in the United States). And tonight would be an exceptional night to be driving it.
The game kicks off at 7:30, and, if you're from Russellville and this is your first trip down to Fulton, you want to be there no later than 6:30 so that you can go explore downtown before the game. So that means you want to leave no later than 3:30 this afternoon.
However, starting at 2 today, they're closing U.S. 68 in downtown Cadiz for the Country Ham Festival, so you want to leave an extra hour or so for that detour. That backs up your start to 2:30. But, come on, you're going to want to eat at the Country Ham Festival. Pork Chop Express in Booth 208 is serving Polish sausage, Philly cheese steaks, corn dogs, pulled pork, rib-eye sandwiches, onion rings, "blooming" onion petals, nachos, two kinds of fried potatoes, deed-fried
pickle chips, fried green tomatoes, soft drinks, tea and lemonade. That's another 90 minutes right there. Noon.
Or, if you want to get a little further down the pike before you stop for dinner, you could stop in at the Windows on the Water restaurant at Lake Barkley State Park on the west side of Cadiz or at Aurora Landing at Kenlake in Hardin. Given that it's Friday night, I'm pretty sure they'll have fried catfish on the buffet lines, and the banana pudding is outstanding.
Truthfully, you just need to leave Russellville immediately.

ReplyDeleteOldies1480.com: "Maybe tonight."
ReplyDeleteI am happy to report that all indications on Oldies1480.com so far today are that Trigg County Wildcat nation is taking Heath's visit awfully lightly.
ReplyDeleteThat does sound like a much better route to Fulton. And thanks for the info on the various booths -- that was interesting.
ReplyDeleteOne of the free concerts this afternoon at the Country Ham Festival in Cadiz is by an act called "Heath Eric & Molly G," out of Owensboro.
ReplyDeleteHEATH ERIC?!? Come on now, Pirates. That has to be a sign.
Oooooh ... best version of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." That won't help Heath. Maybe all the Wildcats are already at the ham festival and not listening, though.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteThe day after I saw "The Big Chill," I went to Camelot Music and bought a copy of the soundtrack, so that I could hear Marvin Gaye's version of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." And then I went out into our utility room, where our stereo was, and I listened to that track about 25 times in a row.
ReplyDeleteI knew a guy in college who had no idea that anyone but CCR had ever done that song.
ReplyDeleteThis just in from the mural beat ... The Mayfield Cardinals are in Hickman tonight, but things are still busy around War Memorial Stadium.
ReplyDelete"I think you have to go all the way back to the 1994-95 Franklin-Simpson games for a regular-season game that had this much talk about it in this area.”
ReplyDeleteA few other games I'll be interested in from tonight ...
ReplyDeleteFranklin County at Anderson County. I really have missed reading John Herndon this season (The Anderson News put up a paywall since last season). I would have especially loved to read the rest of this column.

ReplyDeleteWell, I decided to check in on Russellville's big trip to Fulton, but, alas, WRUS AM 610 apparently couldn't do a live remote. The radio team apparently will be bringing tapes back home tonight, and WRUS is broadcasting that game at 2 tomorrow afternoon.
ReplyDeleteSo, instead, we've got the last 40 seconds or so of Logan County's home game against Barren County. It's 14-14. Logan was driving but fumbled, and Barren returned the ball to Logan County 36.
"If nothing else, it's been exciting," says one of the WRUS commentators.

ReplyDeleteI checked in on WYMC, which purports to carry Mayfield Cardinal, St. Louis Cardinal and Louisville Cardinal games. All three teams were active tonight, but when I tuned in a little bit ago they were playing "Chicago, That Toddlin' Town," by Frank Sinatra.
ReplyDeleteMayfield won, 50-2, at Fulton County. St. Louis is up, 5-1, on the Brewers.
ReplyDeleteFinal in Cadiz: Trigg 62, Heath 12.
ReplyDeleteSome scraps from around the state.
