Pennant Fever

There was a lot of laughter in Britain over the weekend, as Mario Balotelli -- Manchester City's high-octane striker -- set his house on fire at 1 A.M. the night before the big Manchester City/Manchester United derby, because he and his friends were shooting off fireworks in his bathroom. Same old City, the experts said. Except then Balotelli scored two goals in the match, and City thrashed United -- on United's home ground -- by the incredible score of 6-1. City's victory ended United's 19-game home winning streak in league play, as well as its 37-game home unbeaten streak in all competitions. It was the first time United had lost a league match at home by five goals since February 12, 1955. And it was the first time United had conceded six goals in a league match at home since September 13, 1930. So this was a big deal.

Having said that, it's still a long season, and United has come from behind before. But fans of the Sky Blues -- who haven't won the league since 1968 -- are celebrating right now. Here is the top of the table:

1. Man City: 8-0-1 (25 points)
2. Man Utd: 6-1-2 (20 points)
3. Chelsea: 6-2-1 (19 points) (goal differential of 10)
4. Newcastle: 5-0-4 (19 points) (goal differential of 6)
5. Spurs: 5-2-1 (16 points)
6. Liverpool: 4-2-3 (15 points)
7. Arsenal: 4-4-1 (13 points)
