Oh, Kentucky

Homecoming in Union. Honeyfest in Leitchfield.

Do call it a comeback.

"Maysville is a better place because of Sam Baker."

C-J and John Ed Pearce love.

Good jobs news from Franklin.

I don't believe I ever remember of any Heath High School student attending the University of Louisville.

I really wish they had quoted some folks from the church in Owensboro, and I'd also like to know more about his best-laid Birmingham plans.

The wife and I switched to a Tepur-Pedic mattress this year, and it's fantastic.

We also went to Wal-mart last night. I got some new Hanes socks, and my feet feel great this morning.

One last bit about me ... we went to the downtown Gallery Hop on Saturday evening, and it was terrific.

Turning to sports, Kentuckians across the NFL are making the (cheating) New England Patriots look horrible! Here, Michael Bush of Louisville Eastern High School barrels through the hapless New England defense. And, here, fading New England quarterback Tom Brady is intercepted by Paducah Tilghman product George Wilson.

On second thought, one more bit about me ... I really should've spent Sunday afternoon watching the golf from Cary, N.C.

  1. The Kentucky desk, meanwhile, will be keeping an eye on proceedings in Bowling Green today and Wednesday. The Leachman Buick-GMC-Cadillac/KHSAA Boys State Golf tournament has commenced at BG Country Club. Elizabethtown's Kyle Jury is even through three holes for the early lead, and Heath's Chad Behbehani tees off at 1 p.m. Central. Maybe Joe B and Denny will be doing live-remote, hushed-voice commentary, but, if not, we can follow the scoring here.

The girls' tournament, by the way, is scheduled for Friday and Saturday. Sydney Trimble will be toting the bag for the Lady Pirates.

  2. Two Calloway County boys are among a group at 1-over, behind Etown's Jury.

Caldwell County's Emma Talley, of course, will be the big news at the girls tournament. Six straight First Region titles.

  3. It appears as though the KHSAA is gathering each boy's scores every three holes. Montgomery County's Connor Banis has joined Etown's Jury at tournament-leading even poth, and both have played three holes--though different three holes each.

Interesting that I'm on Jury duty today, because my wife is on jury duty today.

  4. All three of these leaders have played six holes.

    1. Kyle Jury, Etown, 2-under
2T. Van Giles, Adair County, 1-under
2T. Nick McCarthy, East Jessamine, 1-under

  5. Joe B and Denny are not in Bowling Green. I'm not sure where Coach Crum is, but Joe B is in the Lexington studio, talking about how great Kroger is.

  6. We're back to Rafferty's Trivia Questions, by the way. Today's: What two players are the ABA's top two all-time scorers?

  7. It's not Rick Barry and Dan Issel.

    ReplyDelete
  8. It's not George Gervin and Julius Erving.

  9. It's not Dan Issel and Charlie Scott.

  10. It's not Artis Gilmore and Dan Issel.

  11. It's not Rick Barry and Julius Erving.

  12. It's Dan Issel and Louie Dampier!

"Little Louie," in fact, was No. 1! Kevin from Benton, listening to WCVL, is today's Rafferty's Trivia Winner.

"We appreciate WCVL so much," Joe B says. "They cover all of western Kentucky. Marshall County is a good area--it is my second home. They talk about Kentucky hospitality, but it is exemplified in western Kentucky."

Joe B makes Kevin mention the name of the road where the Paducah Rafferty's is located. He loves hearing about "Hinkleville Road."

  13. New leaders in Bowling Green ... Jeff Meade of Ashland Paul Blazer and Trent Staples of Henderson County have gotten through their first three holes in even par, and that's good for tournament lead.

Etown's Kyle Jury, who had led a lot of the opening morning, goes bogey, double, bogey, double on holes 4 through 6. He's now at 6-over.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Three more holes carded for Blazer's Jeff Meade, and he's back to 1-over. So, for the moment, Staples leads alone.

Appears to me that you're going to be in the hunt if you can play every three holes in no more than one stroke over par. Evan Shelley of Clinton County has played nine holes in 2-over. Logan Hogge of Bath County has gotten through 12 in 3-over. McCarthy of East Jess is 4-over through 12. Those guys are not in the current top seven golfers, but I suspect they will be by first day's end.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Joe B is now taking some time to praise offensive left tackles in football--not specific left tackles but, apparently, all of the left tackles at all levels of football. Kind of in the same way that folks generally praise firefighters and soldiers.

  16. Now he's on to the burgoo and bread pudding at Keeneland. He thinks those are great, too.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Oh, man, I am so happy you are doing the Boys' Golf Tournament. I always mean to follow that, and I always forget.

Can you tell us anything about Bowling Green Country Club?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Clinton County's Shelley is now 1-over through 15 holes played. He's officially tied for the lead with Ashland Blazer's Meade, but Meade has played only six holes.

Andy Miller of Newport Central Catholic is now 3-over through 12 holes. That's a good score, too.

    ReplyDelete
  19. You know what? I can't. I don't believe I've ever been there. I covered a minor-league golf tournament for several years in Bowling Green, but that was played at one of the public courses. And I covered a celebrity tournament one time, but that one was at another BG country club, Indian Hills.

Evel Knievel's shanked his first tee shot in that celebrity tournament, by the way. The ball skipped off a rock and struck WBKO's (superniceguy) Gene Birk between the eyes and broke his glasses. Birk went to the emergency room but returned dutifully to finish his story. Turned out it was Gene's birthday!

I had no idea that Gene Birk was in Close Encounters of the Third Kind! I love that movie.

  20. Ashland Blazer's Meade has maintained his 1-over score through nine holes, and he and Clinton County's Shelley remain tied for the lead.

Newport Central Catholic's Miller at 3-over through 12. Bath County's Hogge is now through 15 holes, and he's at 4-over. Etown's Jury and East Jess's McCarthy are both 5-over through 15.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Indeed, Clinton County's Evan Shelley might well have a pretty significant lead after today's first round. Shelley's 1-over through 15 holes played leads Daviess County's Raghav Goyal by one stroke and Ashland Blazer's Kelly Porter by two. Both of those guys have played only nine holes.

Ashland Blazer's Jeff Meade has fallen back to 4-over through 12 holes of play. He is tied with two others, including Bath County's Logan Hogge, who has completed 15 holes.

The 5-overs include Andy Miller of Newport Central Catholic through 15 and Jarrod Combs of Hazard through 12.

Elizabethtown's Kyle Jury has finished his round in 6-over 78.

Reminder: Heath's Chad Behbehani tees at 1 p.m. Central!

    ReplyDelete
  22. This course is simply chewing up the field. Clinton County's Shelley is done for the day, at 2-over 74. Daviess County's Goyal is also still at 2-over, but he still has only nine holes in the books.

Bath County's Hogge squeezed in a birdie in his last three holes of the day, and he's now through 18 alone at 3-over.

Etown's Jury, through with his round at 6-over, is now back up to being part of a seven-way tie for seventh.

  23. The Clinton County News reported last week that no "Golf Dawg" had made the state tournament since 2000.

    ReplyDelete
  24. No idea if these tee times are based on handicap, but Cooper Musselman is at 1-under after three holes. Musselman is from Louisville Saint Xavier, and the Tigers Tweet that they have won two of the last three state team titles.

    ReplyDelete
  25. John Cornelison of Madison Central has joined St. X's Musselman at the top of the leaderboard, at 1-under.

Clinton County's Evan Shelley remains the only golfer to have recorded more than three holes of results (he's done for the day) and scored 2-over or better.

Our man Behbehani presumably teed off about 15 minutes ago, but his first three holes are not yet in the books.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Stephen Stallings of St. X has joined teammate Musselman and Madison Central's Cornelison at 1-under.

It would be so, so great if Behbehani won the whole thing.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Still no Behbehani scores. My heart is about to beat out of my chest.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Still no Behbehani update!

St. X's Stallings has held at 1-under after nine holes. All 24 other golfers between he and finished Shelley of Clinton County at 2-over have played six or fewer holes.

    ReplyDelete
  29. AND HERE WE GO!

Behbehani is even through three holes. At the moment, the Heath Pirate is tied for third--behind Stallings of St. X and Preston French of Lexington Henry Clay, who is at 1-under through three holes.

    ReplyDelete
  30. St. X's Stallings is now through 12 holes and still at 1-under.

Three other names to watch: Pikeville's Noah Combs, Lexington Christian's Chandler Fischer and Danville's J.B. Williams are all 1-over through nine.

    ReplyDelete
  31. If Behbehani gets through six holes at even or better, I'm breaking out the "HP SPECIAL REPORT" treatment.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oooh ... Nick Thompson of Paducah Saint Mary's is 1-under through six.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hager Collins of Lexington Christian is even through nine.

    ReplyDelete
  34. St. X's Stallings: even through 15.

Clinton County's Shelley was 2-over for the first round. He and Stallings remain the only golfers to have recorded scores for more than nine holes who are better than 3-over.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Thompson of St. Mary's is still through only nine holes, but he has advanced to 2-under--two strokes better than anyone else in the tournament.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Heath's Chad Behbehani is now 5-over through nine holes.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Golfers in the top 12 who have completed nine or more holes ...

    1. Nick Thompson, Paducah Saint Mary's, -2 (through 9 holes)
2T. Stephen Stallings, Louisville Saint Xavier, E (15)
    2T. Blake Hamilton, Union Ryle, E (12)
7T. Fred Allen Meyer, West Jessamine, +1 (12)
7T. Connor Slade, Louisville Christian Academy, +1 (12)
7T. Preston French, Lexington Henry Clay, +1 (9)
    7T. Matthew Mahle, Lexington Christian, +1 (9)
    12T. Evan Shelley, Clinton County, +2 (18)
    12T Kyle Congelton, Madison Central, +2 (9)
    12T. Taylor Thompson, Louisville Collegiate, +2 (9)

    ReplyDelete
  38. At what point did they start to play the tournament in the fall instead of the spring.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Thompson of St. Mary's holds steady at 2-under, now through 12 holes.

Stallings of St. X and Hamilton of Ryle are both even.

The 1-over group has thinned to LexCath's Mahle, West Jess's Meyer, Henry Clay's French and Union County's Duncan McCormick.

    Clinton County's Shelley, Danville's J.B. Williams, Louisville Collegiate's Taylor Thompson are 2-over.

    Heath's Behbehani is 6-over through 12 holes.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I don't know when they moved the season. That's a good question.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Eric -
I'm pretty sure Dr. Beverly Dilworth - HHS class of 1984 - is a graduate of the University of Louisville Medical School; she did her undergrad at Murray.
    That's all I've got.

  42. YEAH! YEAH! Great reporting--thanks, Jackie!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Stephen Stallings of Louisville Saint Xavier has completed the first round in even-par 72, making him our new leader in the clubhouse.

    Best 18-hole scores so far:

    1. Stallings, St. X, E
    2. Evan Shelley, Clinton County, +2
    3. Logan Hogge, Bath County, +3

Leader on the course remains Nick Thompson of Paducah Saint Mary's, at 2-under through 12 holes.

    ReplyDelete
  44. MORGANFIELD IN THE HOUSE ... Duncan McCormick of Union County has surged to even-par through 12 holes.

And J.B. Williams of Danville is now off the course with a 2-over 74.

    ReplyDelete
  45. This is a lot of fun.

Thompson of St. Mary's is back to 1-under through 15 holes. Can he hold on to his one-stroke over in-the-clubhouse Stallings of St. X? Or might even McCormick of Union County get below par in his last six holes on the BG Country Club course?

West Jess's Meyer is alone at 1-over, through 15.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Heath's Behbehani: 8-over with three to play.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Union County's McCormick has faded to 2-over through 15 holes, and Ryle's Hamilton completes his round at 1-over 73.

Everybody's done but Thompson, McCormick and Thompson:

    1. Nick Thompson, Paducah Saint Mary, 1-under (15 holes)
    2. Stephen Stallings, Louisville Saint Xavier, E
T3. Blake Hamilton, Union Ryle, +1
T3. Fred Allen Meyer, West Jessamine, +1
T5. Evan Shelley, Clinton County, +2
    T5. J.B. Williams, Danville, +2
T5. Duncan McCormick, Union County, +2
T5. Taylor Thompson, Louisville Collegiate, +2

    ReplyDelete
  48. Thompson of St. Mary's comes in at even par, so it appears he and Stallings of St. X will share first-round lead.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Here are the top 10 team scores:

    1. Lexington Christian: +18 (306)
    2. St. Mary: +24 (312)
    3. Madison Central: +25 (313)
    4. Louisville Christian Academy: +27 (315)
    5. Louisville St. Xavier: +29 (317)
    6. Ryle: +35 (323)
    7. W. Jessamine: +36 (324)
    8. Covington Catholic: +40 (328)
    9. Ashland Blazer: +41 (329)
    10. Corbin: +44 (332)

  50. And when did they go to a multi-round setup. I'm pretty sure when we were in high school it was a one and done.
