Eric did a great job covering the KHSAA Girls' Tournament, but I wanted to give some extra attention to Miss Emma Talley of Princeton, who won her third state title in four years (she would have won four in a row, but one year she was disqualified for an incorrect scorecard). Look at this leaderboard:
1. Miss E. Talley (Caldwell Co.): -6 (69+69=138)
T2. Miss L. Gumm (N. Hardin): +4 (73+75=148)
T2. Miss J. VanMeter (S. Warren): +4 (76+72=148)
4. Miss M. Theiss (Oldham Co.): +8 (75+77=152)
5. Miss M. Wilshire (Scott Co.): +9 (76+77=153)
Now think about this: she won this tournament by ten shots. And this is not a Class A or Class AA deal -- there's only one KHSAA golf championship for the whole state. I am going to predict right now that you will never again see a girl from a public school in Western Kentucky win the state tournament by 10 shots. In fact, I have been following Kentucky High School sports since the mid-1970s, and I cannot remember any athlete from Western Kentucky -- in any sport -- who was so much better than the rest of the state.
I'm disappointed to see that she has verbally committed to Alabama.
ReplyDeleteThanks, and I completely agree. I got jazzed in following the excellence of her performance.
ReplyDeleteMy guess is that if the number-one football prospect in the country ever turns up at Caldwell County, that kid will also go to Alabama.
ReplyDeleteThis puts her in the running for Kentuckian of the year I would say.
ReplyDeleteThis is a good point, Rube. I could see myself becoming something of an LPGA fan in the next few years.
