Album Review: When the Sun Goes Down by Selena Gomez

In three years Selena Gomez has put out three albums.  Her last album, A Year Without Rain, was the first album I reviewed for the Heath Post.  Not much has changed since that release in her approach though it feels a bit more natural.

Thing is whoever is picking out the songs for her know exactly what they are doing.  Don't know if it is her or her label, but they do a very good job of finding songs that she can sing, and that have good pop hooks.  There is definitely no let down from her last album and in fact I would say this is a step up.

Gomez will turn 20 next year and that means her core fans will be getting close to 20 as well.  I found this album to show a step up in maturity in lyrics and vocals and if she can continue to grow then she could be a solid pop performer for some time.

If you like bubble gum pop then you'll like this album.  It's a solid slick pop album and though formulaic it works. I know I slam on the formulaic nature of country and R&B and it seems I am giving this album a pass, probably because I like dance pop so much, but I'm OK with formulas when they produce solid songs and this album doesn't have a bad song on it.

Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 2 out of 5 stars for Not Bad.

  1. Hey, I've heard this song, too! I love it when you review records with songs that I've heard.
