Western is wearing red because they are the "home" team for this Nashville game. To be honest, it doesn't look like that many people made the trip down from Bowling Green; there are a lot of empty seats at L.P. Field. But the people who are there seem very enthusiastic.
UK looks terrible so far. They threw an interception that led to a Western field goal, and the Wildcats have yet to make a first down. But, of course, this isn't that surprising -- UK rarely plays good football in the state of Tennessee.
Just a reminder: last year Western went 2-10 (their only wins were against Louisiana-Lafayette and Arkansas State). UK went 6-6 (but only 2-6 in the SEC).
ReplyDeleteLast year UK beat Western 63-28 in Lexington.
By the way, Murray gave Louisville a pretty good game tonight up in Louisville. The Cardinals won, but the score was only 21-9. That game was also on ESPNU.
ReplyDeleteIt is so cool to start the season with a double-header featuring four teams from Kentucky.
Western's uniforms look FANTASTIC!
ReplyDeleteUK: nine plays, five yards and a turnover.
ReplyDeleteWhat a ridiculous penalty on the Hilltoppers.
ReplyDeleteWhat a huge miss by the UK receiver.
ReplyDeleteDelay of game.
ReplyDeleteFor the record, I'm listening to 103.7 the Point -- WPTQ-FM in Cave City, Kentucky. Their web page tells me that they are Southern Kentucky's Rock Station.
ReplyDeleteUK quarterback Morgan Newton trips and falls back at the UK 3.
ReplyDeleteThe Hilltopper announcers are being very careful to always refer to the school as "WKU" -- even though that takes five syllables, while you can say "Western" with only two.
ReplyDeleteThat's the end of the first quarter. UK has run 13 plays -- and gained 1 yard. UK will be punting from inside its own five at the beginning of the second quarter.
ReplyDeleteAgain, Eric's right about Western's uniforms. They look great.
ReplyDeleteMississippi State is leading Memphis 31-7 at the half.
ReplyDeleteFrom the UK 26, Western just had a man wide open down the middle of the field for an easy touchdown, but the Western quarterback through the ball about five feet beyond the receiver. What a big mistake.
ReplyDeleteWestern misses a 33-yard field goal. Another opportunity gone.
ReplyDeleteOn the Western radio broadcast, the announcers are engaged in a very lengthy conversation with a Western grad who is running a management software company. This is literally the longest in-game interview I have ever heard.
ReplyDeleteWestern's QB throws another bad pass, which bounces off of the shoulder pad of the Western receiver, pops up into the air, and is intercepted by UK. The Cats take over at the Western 22.
ReplyDeleteW. Kentucky 3 - 7 Kentucky (5:46 left in 2d quarter)
ReplyDeleteKentucky cashes in the turnover and jumps into the lead.
W. Kentucky 3 - 7 Kentucky (beginning of 4th quarter)
ReplyDeleteI haven't posted very much because not very much has been happening. Western's QB is just awful. He is 4-16 with no touchdowns and two interceptions. But UK isn't much better. In fact, UK has less than 100 yards of total offense. UK has a little drive going now; they are at the Western 40.
Cancel that drive. UK throws an interception. Western takes over at its own 5.
ReplyDeleteUpdate from Philadelphia: Temple beat Villanova 42-7 tonight.
ReplyDeleteUpdate from Moscow: with 11:06 left in the game, Bowling Green leads Idaho 32-15.
ReplyDeleteMississippi State beat Memphis 59-14, which is bad news for the rest of the SEC.
ReplyDeleteFor the record, I think the Western announcers are quite good, except for the fact that they have to keep referring to the team as "WKU."
ReplyDeleteThere are about 25,000 people at this game. The Western announcers point out that the largest home crowd for the Hilltoppers took place in 1968, when the Tops drew just over 20,000 for a game against Eastern. So technically, this is the largest "home" crowd in Western history.
ReplyDeleteW. Kentucky 3 - 14 Kentucky (4:35 left in 4th quarter)
ReplyDeleteUK finally gets going. On 3d and 16 from deep in his own territory, UK quarterback Morgan Newton runs for 58 yards. And then, soon afterward, he throws a 31-yard touchdown pass. So the Cats may finally be safe.
On the other hand, the Western announcers are encouraged by the performance of the Hilltopper defense in this game.
The official attendance was 24,599.
W. Kentucky 3 - 14 Kentucky (FINAL)
ReplyDeleteWell, I am going to choose to look on the bright side. Western did look like a I-A club -- at least on defense. I think they will win more than two games this year. And the new uniforms look great. UK's offense looked terrible, but we will hope that reflected good play by the Western defense.
Personally, I'm just happy that football has returned. GO FOOTBALL!
