This Week's Games feat. "Ah, footbah"

A lot of games this week, as the teams in western Kentucky range far and wide seeking district competition. Heath (2-4) and Madisonville-North Hopkins (5-1) have the week off; the Pirates will want to recover from two tough games against Murray and Tilghman, but the Maroons (who are on a massive roll) probably wish they were playing.

Of the teams that are playing, I am most interested in the Tilghman/Fort Campbell matchup. For years, Fort Campbell was a big power in the lower divisions, while Tilghman played the big boys. Now they are in the same district, and whoever wins this game will walk away with the district title. There will also be a huge game at Ohio County, where the Christian County Colonels (who have outscored 6 opponents by 212-78) will challenge the homestanding Bobcats (who have outscored their 6 opponents 236-66). The 5A title is shaping up to be a real battle (Bowling Green and Warren Central are both undefeated as well), and the Ohio County/Christian County game will let us see where that is going.

Finally, spare a poor thought for Fulton City, which spends most of the time trying to avoid playing schools in Kentucky at all, but which must play Mayfield this week. At least City haven't tried to merge themselves out of existence. And to me, that counts for a lot.

Ballard Mem. (3-2) v. Murray (4-1)
Calloway Co. (2-4) v. Hopkins Co. Cent. (1-4)
Crittenden Co. (2-3) v. Marshall Co. (3-2)
Graves Co. (1-4) v. Muhlenberg Co. (0-5)
Hopkinsville (0-6) v. Owensboro Apollo (1-4)
Lone Oak (4-2) v. Owensboro (2-4)
Mayfield (6-0) v. Fulton City (1-4)
Ohio Co. (6-0) v. Christian Co. (6-0)
Paducah Tilghman (4-2) v. Fort Campbell (3-3)
Reidland (1-5) v. Caldwell Co. (3-3)
Russellville (3-3) v. Fulton Co. (1-4)
Trigg Co. (4-1) v. Webster Co. (0-5)
Union Co. (2-3) v. Butler Co. (5-1)

  3. Good doping of tonight's action, GoHeath. Same games intrigue me--Tilghman at Fort Campbell and Christian County at Ohio County--from the West. Also: Murray's trip to La Center (via Blandville).

  4. Goshen North Oldham at Louisville Waggener tonight. Allegedly, it often goes the other way around.

  5. Biggest night of the season in Louisville: Trinity vs. Saint Xavier. Tailgating and pondering.

  6. Bowling Green's WBKO ABC Channel 13 weighs in on the SoKy-focused throwdowns. They like County at Hartford.

Hart County at Edmonson County looks like a good game. Good trip from Munfordville to Brownsville, too. It would be a good chance to try out the Crystal Lake Coffee Shop at Mammoth Cave National Park, which I've always thought looked really good.

  7. "Here's Olivia," www.Oldies1480.com promos, simply.

Glad to find that Midnight Special clip for the 1974 timeline.

  8. The Associated Press No. 1s, of course, remain Mayfield in Class A, Newport Central Catholic in 2A, Louisville Central in 3A, Fort Thomas Highlands in 4A, Bowling Green in 5A and Trinity in 6A.

Covington Holmes is at Newport Central Catholic, Harrison County is at Highlands and Bowling Green is at Logan County tonight. It appears that Louisville Central is idle.

  9. I'm interested in tuning in to tonight's Hancock County game in Calhoun--primarily because I've never been to McLean County's stadium.

Truthfully, what most excites me among today's iHigh.com lineup is the Franklin-Simpson homecoming parade, archived from this morning.

  11. Welcome, "Ah, Footbah!" I'm going to see Moneyball tonight, so I'll be thinking of you and all the other A's fans.

  12. Thanks!

Enjoy the movie. And please be sure to report back on who plays Bert Campaneris and whether he does a good job.

  13. Paducah's WPSD Channel 6 reports Tilghman trailed, 7-3, at half against Fort Campbell--but then won 31-7. That's two years in a row that the Blue Tornadoes rallied from behind to beat Fort Campbell.

Wow: Christian County 31, Ohio County 27. County now faces four straight games away from the Stadium of Champions.

Mayfield, at War Memorial, wore the red jerseys and black pants in routing Fulton City, 57-6.

Ballard Memorial in Barlow (not La Center--sorry) dons green jersey and black pants in losing big to Murray, 40-0.

  14. 1974! The "Gridiron Glory" guys on Channel 6 that Marshall County and Crittenden County hadn't played since 1974. In Marion, the Marshals prevail, 15-10.

  15. Wes Watt quoting Logan County coach Dain Gregory in The Daily News after his team's 76-7 home loss to Bowling Green. “They are as good as advertised."

Twelve personal-foul penalties, notes Chad Bishop in The DN, in the close Franklin-Simpson homecoming win over Warren East.

  16. It was a long, windy trip home along Ky. 52 from Lancaster to Stanton late last night after Powell County lost, 57-27, at Garrard County, but at least the Pirate backers could take solace in the fact that their team had never made it so deep into a season undefeated. Bath County (2-4) visits Powell County (5-1) next Friday.
