Oh, Kentucky

Hooray for the start of the NFL season tonight. "Ah, footbah" readers will recognize the names of several former KHSAA performers who have moved on to the pros:

-- David Akers of Lexington Tates Creek (and the University of Louisville) and Rob Bironas of Louisville Trinity are probably the most widely familiar KHSAA alums to NFL fans. They're the kickers for the 49ers and Titans, respectively.

-- Tim Masthay of Murray High (and UK) returns as the Packers' punter. He was fantastic in Green Bay's Super Bowl run last winter.

-- Yeremiah Bell of Winchester George Rogers Clark (and Eastern Kentucky University) returns as the Dolphins' starting strong safety and a team captain. George Wilson of Paducah Tilghman is a starting safety with the Bills. Mike Mitchell of Fort Thomas Highlands is typically a Raiders starting safety, but he's been hurt.

Corey Peters of Louisville Central (and UK) is a starting Falcons defensive tackle.

-- Chris Redman of Louisville Male (and U of L) is the Falcons' backup quarterback.

-- Michael Bush of Louisville Male (and U of L) and Alfonso Smith of Louisville Waggener (and UK) are backup running backs with the Raiders and Cardinals, respectively.

-- Jacob Tamme of Boyle County and UK and Luke Stocker of Berea Madison Southern are backup tight ends with the Colts and Buccaneers, respectively.

-- Myron Pryor of Louisville Eastern and UK is a Patriots defensive tackle.

-- Garry Williams of Louisville Seneca and UK is a Panthers defensive tackle, but he's on the injured reserve this season.

-- Quarterback Hunter Cantwell of Tilghman is on the Ravens' practice squad.

You'll be able to follow many of these players' exploits by following The Heath Post's fantasy-football team this season.

In honor of tonight's NFL kickoff, maybe the EKU folks today will have a breakout session on Yeremiah Bell.

Actually, Yeremiah Bell's success with the Dolphins isn't the only reason that crowd over in Richmond should be happy today.

I had no idea that Pikeville was once "Piketon."
