Maryland v. Miami (Fla.)

I have very little interest in this game. I mention it only because Maryland just ran onto the field in the ugliest uniforms I have ever seen. (I would link to a picture, but I can't find one. This must be some sort of one-off uniform that they are wearing for this game only. At least I hope so.)

    The new uniforms are looking good so far. The Terps take the opening kickoff and drive straight down the field for a touchdown.

    To be fair, Maryland's uniforms are actually not worse than the ones that Georgia won in their game with Boise State. I felt that one of the main reasons UGA lost that game is that they were embarrassed to be seen in public wearing such silly clothes.

    Maryland gets the ball back, drives down to the Miami 5, and looks like they are going in for an easy touchdown -- when all of a sudden the Terp quarterback throws an unbelievably silly interception. That looked more like the Terp football with which I am familiar.

    My favorite local team, the Navy Midshipmen, launched their season with a 40-17 win over the Delaware Blue Hens. That's a very good result; Navy usually has a lot of trouble with Delaware.

    Maryland got the ball back and drove down for a field goal. Both the Terps and the Canes have new coaches this year; right now the Terps fans have to be happier with their choice.

    Miami comes right back with an almost effortless 65-yard drive. Now the Cane fans are feeling much better.

    While I took a break to eat chocolate cake, the Terps kicked a field goal to go up by six, but the Canes responded with another TD to take the lead. And the phrase "same old Maryland" is heard in the land.

    But wait! Miami fumbles the ball on its own 30, and a Maryland lineman pulls the ball out of the air AND TAKES IT TO THE HOUSE! The Terps fans, who are being hammered by heavy rain, celebrate wildly.

    Maryland's new coach does not go for two, but kicks the point for a six-point lead. That's a good sign. A lot of coaches would go for two there, but it's usually a big mistake to do so.

    For the third time in this game, a long Maryland drive ends in a short field goal. The Maryland offense has moved inside the Miami 20 on five different occasions in this game, and the Terps have only one TD to show for those possessions.

    Maryland is now 1-6 on efforts inside the Red Zone. This time, the Terps did not even get their usual 3 points; their kicker missed a 23-yard field goal.

    The missed field goal comes back to haunt Maryland. Miami holds the ball for over 8 minutes before kicking a short field goal of its own to re-take the lead.

    Miami tried a quick out pattern to get the first down. But a Terp player sniffed out the play, picked off the pass, and TOOK IT TO THE HOUSE! Maryland's SECOND TD off of a Miami turnover. But the Terps botched the extra point, so Miami still has a chance.

    Miami can't do anything on its last possession, and the Terps have a huge home victory to open the season. This was an excellent game.

    I am so happy that college football is back.
