If you wanted me to argue that Jill Scott's Beautifully Human was the best album of its decade, I could take up that argument. I would not take up that argument for this album.
If Scott had never made her first two albums maybe I would look at this album differently, but she did and so I naturally look at this album through the lens of those first two. Two albums where she was lyrically smart and vocally expressive and soulful. All of those components are missing here.
But the biggest loss is Jill Scott. I miss her voice, her power, her beauty that seems so present on Beautifully Human. That album came out seven years ago and in that time she has become a full time actress, been through a divorce, had another child, etc. You can't go home again and once you've walked away from music as your primary artistic expression, I'm not sure you can ever return.
Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 1 out of 5 stars for Just OK.
I love this song. On my third straight listen. Love the happy video, too.
ReplyDeleteI like almost everything that Dolly Parton and Jennifer Lopez do, and I'm starting to think I feel the same way about Jill Scott.
