Ah, footbah

Fort Thomas Highlands, No. 1 in this week's Associated Press Class 4A poll, has already logged its win for the week (61-13 over Edgewood Dixie Heights last night), and Louisville Trinity, No. 1 in Class 6A, is off this weekend. So one might think there wouldn't be much argument as to where Kentucky's best high-school football is to be played tonight.

Bowling Green (AP Class 5A No. 1) at Louisville Saint Xavier (No. 2 in 6A). But, in fact, there are multiple candidates for game of the night, and certainly this game is very near the top of the list.

Mayfield (AP Class A No. 1) at Paducah Tilghman (No. 4 in Class 3A). This game, of course, is so huge that Mayfield's WYMC 1430 AM is planning to broadcast live from this afternoon's pep rally at the school, before the team heads up U.S. 45 to McRight Field.

Elizabethtown at Central Hardin and Meade County at Radcliff John Hardin. I imagine Bill Ransdell nation is pretty antsy this afternoon about the Etown game. If the 0-2 visitors don't get this one, it could be a big, bad season-opening streak, writes Nathaniel Bryan in The News-Enterprise. The better game in Hardin County, however, figures to be up U.S. 31W in Radcliff, where the top two in Chuck Jones's "Super Seven" get it on.

Middlesboro vs. Bell County. Down in the state's southeastern corner, they're pretty fired up about the City County Bowl.

Ballard Memorial at Heath. But, of course, for biased me, tonight is all about whether the piping-hot Pirates can extend their winning streak, against the visiting Bombers.

Louisville DeSales at Louisville Central (AP Class 3A No. 1). Another hot matchup.

Pike County Central at Powell County. Pike County Central entered the AP 3A poll this week at No. 9, as the Appalachian News Express of Pikeville joined the list of media casting votes.

Edmonson County at Grayson County. I wonder if freshman hero Talon Gary will be on the field for the home team.

Hopkinsville vs. Greenwood and Trigg County vs. Crittenden County. It's the Toyota of Hopkinsville/David Sadler Bowl, and WKDZradio.com will start its coverage with the Toyota of Hopkinsville Friday Night Blitz at 5 Central.

Campbell County at Newport Central Catholic (AP Class 2A No. 1). If the home team wins, the 2A power will be 2-0 against Class 6A teams this season.

Glasgow at Barren County.

Boyle County at Danville.

Reidland at Fulton County .

Christian County at Henderson County.

Russellville at Hopkins County Central.

Marshall County at Lone Oak.

North Hardin at Madisonville-North Hopkins.

Calloway County at Massac County (Ill.)

Graves County at Murray.

Logan County at Todd County Central.

Fort Campbell at Warren Central.

Union County at Webster County.

  7. Well, heck. Heath leads, 13-7, in the second quarter, but Ballard Memorial rallies on the road to win, 28-13.

  8. Crittenden County 10, Trigg County 7 ... still in the third quarter of the second, heat-delayed game of the Toyota of Hopkinsville/David Sadler Bowl, and WKDZradio.com is (still) there.

  9. First game of the bowl: Bowling Green Greenwood 63, Hoptown 13.

  10. Ninety-yard Trigg County touchdown pass (tied for longest in school history)! 14-10, Wildcats, still in third quarter ...

  11. Pardon ... misheard ... Trigg County record is a 94-yard pass, against Crittenden, oddly, in 2000. This one is second-longest.

  14. Ten minutes to go, and Trigg County picks up 27 on a third-and-6 from its own 48. Still leading, 14-10.

"A lot of Crittenden County players looking tired," reports WKDZ. "Look at them. They're bent over and grabbing their knees right now."

  15. Grayson County lost the Tobacco Stick, but it might be headed toward winning standing as the Kentucky desk's pet team of 2011.
