College football starts this weekend, so the western Kentucky high schools are all playing on Friday night. Also, we're almost done with the double-headers and games against out-of-state teams we see during the first few weeks. Instead, we have what should be some great western Kentucky matchups, including what could be the last game between Heath and the Ballard Mallards, a good game between Lone Oak and Marshall County, and an interesting matchup between Murray and Graves.
This is all topped, of course, by what is probably the game of the year in western Kentucky: Tilghman v. Mayfield. This is always a big game, but it is particularly huge this year, as both teams are strong contenders for their respective state titles. Last year, Mayfield eked out a 23-20 victory -- and that was the only game in which the Cardinals allowed more than 19 points or scored less than 38. Mayfield is working on a 17-game winning streak, and if they win on Friday, that streak will get much longer before the end of the season.
Friday, September 2:
Fulton Co. (0-2) v. Reidland (1-1)
Heath (1-1) v. Ballard Mem. (1-0)
Henderson Co. (1-1) v. Christian Co. (2-0)
Hopkins Co. Cent. (0-1) v. Russellville (0-2)
Hopkinsville (0-2) v. Greenwood (0-2) (at Trigg Co.) (Toyota of Hopkinsville/David Sadler Bowl)
Jackson Preparatory School (Tenn.) v. Fulton City (0-2)
Lone Oak (1-1) v. Marshall Co. (1-0)
Madisonville-North Hopkins (1-1) v. North Hardin (1-0)
Massac Co. (Ill.) v. Calloway Co. (0-2)
Murray (2-0) v. Graves Co. (0-1)
Ohio Co. (2-0) v. Caldwell Co. (2-0)
Paducah Tilghman (1-1) v. Mayfield (2-0)
Trigg Co. (2-0) v. Crittenden Co. (1-0) (Toyota of Hopkinsville/David Sadler Bowl)
Warren Cent. (2-0) v. Fort Campbell (1-1)

Great report--thanks, GoHeath!

Friday's game marks the 100th anniversary of the Mayfield-Paducah Tilghman rivalry, reports WestKentuckyStar.com.
Tilghman leads the all-time series 46-40, with 10 ties. But Mayfield has won 12 of the last 16 matchups, including the last six in a row.
ReplyDeleteMayfield and Tilghman did not play in 1913, 1916, 1918, and 1920. That's why this meeting will be their 97th, not their 101st.
ReplyDeleteThe Kentucky desk all week will be monitoring Mayfield's WYMC, 1430 AM, for updates on the big game Friday.

On this mellow Monday morning, Carole King gently urges the Cardinals:
ReplyDeleteSometimes you win, sometimes you lose
And sometimes the blues get hold of you
Just when you thought you had made it
All around the block, people will talk
But I want to give it all that I've got
I just don't want to waste it
Talkin' 'bout sweet seasons on my mind
Sure does appeal to me
You know we can get there easily
Just like a sailboat sailin' on the sea
O.C. Smith, "Little Green Apples" ... so excellent.
