This is a goofy course. The first four holes are really difficult. Then the next ten holes are quite easy. Then the last four holes are extremely difficult. So Dufner's lead does not mean a whole lot, because he still has to play the last four holes:
1. J. Dufner: -11 (68 holes)
2. K. Bradley: -9 (68)
T3. R. Karlsson (SWE): -7 (70)
T3. A. Hansen (DEN): -7 (69)
T5. D. Toms: -6 (69)
T5. S. Verplank: -6 (68)
On the par-3 15, Keegan Bradley chipped his second shot all the way through the green and into the water. He ended up with a triple bogey that dropped him back to 6 under.
ReplyDeleteAfter watching Bradley's triple bogey, Dufner stepped up to the tee and knocked his shot into the water. But he hit a great shot from the drop zone and holed the putt to make a bogey.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, Karlsson bogeyed the 17th hole to drop to 6 under. And Hansen bogeyed the 16th to drop to 6 under. So Dufner has a four-shot lead with three holes to play.
Current Leaderboard;
ReplyDelete1. J. Dufner: -10 (69 holes)
T2. R. Karlsson (SWE): -6 (71)
T2. A. Hansen (DEN): -6 (70)
T2. K. Bradley: -6 (69)
T2. S. Verplank: -6 (69)
Karlsson was 6 under for the day after 15 holes, and I thought he would cruise home and watch the other guys blow up. Instead, he bogeyed 16, 17, and 18 -- and he finishes at 3 under for the day and only 5 under for the tournament.
ReplyDeleteBradley holes a short putt on 16 to move to 7 under. Scott Verplank holes an incredible bunker shot on 16 to move to 7 under. So Dufner now has a 3-shot lead.
ReplyDeleteAnders Hansen birdies 17 to move to 7 under.
ReplyDeleteCurrent leaderboard:
1. J. Dufner: -10 (69 holes)
T2. A. Hansen (DEN): -7 (71)
T2. K. Bradley: -7 (70)
T2. S. Verplank: -7 (70)
Dufner's second shot on the par-4 16th goes into a greenside bunker.
ReplyDeleteOn the par-3 17th, Scott Verplank -- who just had a miraculous hole-out on 16 to get back into condition -- hits his tee shot into the water. So he's done.
ReplyDeleteBradley puts his shot on 17 safely onto the green.
Hansen's drive on the long par-4 18 goes down the fairway.
Dufner misses his par putt on 16. He taps in for his second bogey in a row:
ReplyDelete1. J. Dufner: -9 (70 holes)
T2. A. Hansen (DEN): -7 (71)
T2. K. Bradley: -7 (70)
T2. S. Verplank: -7 (70) (putting for bogey on 17th green)
Bradley makes a remarkable birdie putt across the green on 17 to move to 8 under!
ReplyDeleteHere is what he's done in the last few holes:
12: EAGLE
13: Par
14: Par
15: TRIPLE BOGEY
16: Birdie
17: Birdie
This is like something out of a move.
Verplank follows up his birdie on 16 with a double bogey on 17. He falls to 5 under, and his chance for the title is gone.
ReplyDeleteCurrent leaderboard:
ReplyDelete1. J. Dufner: -9 (70 holes)
2. K. Bradley: -8 (71)
3. A. Hansen (DEN): -7 (71)
Hansen has a long putt for birdie on 18.
Dufner's tee shot on 17 just barely makes it over the water and onto the green.
ReplyDeleteBradley's drive on 18 avoids the water down the left side and the rough on the right. He will have a shot at the green. He is only the fourth golfer to birdie 16 and 17 in the same round all week. No one has birdied the last three holes in the same round.
ReplyDeleteHansen cannot make his birdie putt on 18, and he finishes at 7 under. If Bradley can make par on 18, we will have an American winner.
ReplyDeleteTime for church! Wrap-up when I return.
ReplyDeleteBack from church! They're giving the trophy to Keegan Bradley.
ReplyDeleteHere's what happened:
1. Keegan Bradley parred the 18th hole to finish at 8 under and eliminate Hansen.
2. Dufner three-putted 17 for his third bogey in a row to fall into a tie at 8 under. Remember that he had a five-shot lead on the tee at 15. But he bogeyed 15, 16, and 17, Bradley birdied 16 and 17, and here we are.
3. Dufner had a 40-footer for birdie to win the tournament on 18, which he missed. He then had a difficult four-footer to tie, which he made. PLAYOFF!
4. The PGA uses a 3-hole playoff. So Dufner and Bradley had to play 16, 17, and 18 again.
5. On the difficult par-4 16th, Dufner hit his approach to within four feet. But then Bradley his his approach four feet! Magnificent stuff.
6. Unfortunately for Dufner, he had a downhill putt, which he missed. Bradley had an uphill putt, which he made. Bradley had a one shot lead.
7. On the par-3 17th, Dufner again took a three-putt bogey. Bradley made a nervy five-footer for par, and took a two-shot lead to the last hole.
8. Dufner birdied the last hole, which is almost impossible. But Bradley had an easy two-putt for par, and the victory.
