PGA Championship -- Day 1 Wrap-Up

I had very low expectations for this tournament, and so far those expectations have been very accurate. The leaderboard looks like something you would have expected to see in the 2002 Quad-Cities. Tiger is probably going to miss the cut, and even if he makes the cut he will not be a factor this weekend. McIlroy may be able to get back into the tournament if his wrist holds up, but he is already seven shots behind. The only really interesting issue at this point is whether Steve Stricker can finally win a major at the age of 44, and thereby become the first American to win a major since Phil Mickelson won the Masters last year. (Actually, it would also be interesting is Shaun Micheel won a second PGA Championship, given that those would be his only two wins on tour. But I consider that prospect to be extremely unlikely). Here is the leaderboard:

1. S. Stricker: -7 (63)

2. J. Kelly: -5 (65)

3. S. Micheel: -4 (66)

4. S. Verplank: -3 (67)

T5. Brandon de Jonge (ZIM): -2 (68)
T5. M. Manassero (ITA): -2 (68)
T5. D. Love III: -2 (68)
T5. J. Senden (AUS): -2 (68)
T5. B. Haas: -2 (68)
T5. B. Jobe: -2 (68)
T5. A. Hansen (DEN): -2 (68)
T5. S. Dyson (ENG): -2 (68)
