I have talked a lot in this blog about influential albums and artists. I've talked about the post punk revival and other influences. Truth is in many ways music is always building on its past.
On Circuital, My Morning Jacket, has taken this to an interesting place. From influences like The Alarm to early Grateful Dead it's hard not to hear a history of rock from say 1970 to 1990 on this album. No influence is repeated and yet it all works to create a tightly structured modern album.
I believe this album works in the end because it's a solid set of 10 songs that feel like they belong together even though they each sound like they have a different foundation. What My Morning Jacket has managed to do is pull in all of these influences and made them all sound like My Morning Jacket.
A good album to put on while you sit outside and enjoy the summer evening.
Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 3 out of 5 stars for Pretty Good.
Hurrah! The band is out of Louisville, with some Shelbyville roots.
ReplyDelete"Across 110th Street" is among their covers.
