U.S. Women's Open -- Day Four -- 6 PM MDT

After the usual round of thunderstorms, the U.S.G.A. has restarted play in the fourth round. NBC, which is being a good sport about the whole thing, is carrying the event live. Here are the current leaders:

1. H.K. Seo (KOR): -4 (65 holes)
T2. S.Y. Ryu (KOR): -2 (62)
T2. A. Stanford: -2 (61)
T2. C. Kerr: -2 (63)
T5. I. Park (KOR): +1 (63)
T5. M. Miyazoto (JPN): +1 (60)

They probably won't be able to finish tonight. Comments as events warrant.

  1. The course looks really cool in the evening light. It looks like when you play the back nine in Mario Golf.

  2. Seo's tee shot on the par-3 12th lands safely on the green. If she pars out, I think she will win.

  3. Remarkably, no Korean has won an event on the LPGA tour this year. According to NBC, this is a big deal in Korea.

  4. Stanford makes a short birdie putt on 8 to get to three under.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Stanford puts her drive on the par-5 ninth right down the middle.

  6. Current standings:

    1. H.K. Seo (KOR): -4 (65 holes)
    2. A. Stanford: -3 (62)
    T3. C. Kerr: -2 (63)
    T3. S.Y. Ryu (KOR): -2 (62)

  7. Seo took only 27 putts in the third round, and she has taken only 15 putts in the first 11 holes today. Now she lines up a lengthy birdie putt on 12, but comes up just short. She taps in for par.

  8. Ryu birdies the ninth to move to 3 under.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Seo puts her drive into the middle of the fairway on the 450-yard par four 13th.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Kerr makes par on the 10th to stay at 2 under.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Seo misses the 13th green with her approach, and she will have a difficult up-and-down to save par.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Stanford rolls in a 15-foot putt for birdie on 9 to move to four under and tie Seo for the lead. She has gone out in 33 shots.

    This is an excellent tournament.

  13. After making a bit of a run early in the last round, Yani Tseng (the number-one player in the world) has faded. She is now 6 over for the tournament with only four holes left to play.

Paula Creamer is also 6 over with nine holes to play. So these two stars are out of it.

    T1. H.K. Seo (KOR): -4 (66 holes)
    T1. A. Stanford: -4 (63)
    3. S.Y. Ryu (KOR): -3 (64)
    4. C. Kerr: -2 (64)

  15. Seo makes a tremendous chip shot, and she should be able to save par on 13.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Stanford splits the fairway with her drive on the 460-yd par four 10th.

    ReplyDelete
  17. NBC thinks that Seo will finish tonight, but that Stanford will have to finish tomorrow morning.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Seo does save par on 13, and she remains in a tie for the lead.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Michelle Wie, who is 13 over, turns up on NBC's coverage. Dottie Pepper states her belief that Wie is too "technical" in her thinking. Johnny Miller says that this is how she was taught. Dottie responds that she wouldn't teach a child that way -- she would let the child's gifts shine.

  20. Seo splits the fairway with her drive on 14.

Kerr leaves her long birdie putt on 11 well short, and she will have a tough time saving par.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Stanford's approach shot on 10 came up short of the green, and her chip shot will leave her a tricky putt for par.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Kerr, who desperately needs to save par on 11, spends a long time on the putt -- and then rolls it just past the hole. She falls to 1 under, and she is running out of holes.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Seo, who has hit every fairway in her fourth round, puts her second shot on the green at the par-four 14th.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Stanford now lines up a very tricky downhill four-footer for par. NBC's announcers are very nervous, but she rolls it in with ease to stay tied with Seo.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Ryu will have a long putt for birdie on the very difficult 11th hole.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Kerr, yelling at her ball after almost every shot, puts her ball on the 12th green -- but not very close to the flag.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Seo lines up a long birdie putt on 14. For once, she is not on line, and the putt slides off to the left. But she should have another par.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Stanford drives into the 11th fairway.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Seo makes par on 14.

Ryu has an excellent approach putt, and she should make par on 11.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Kerr makes an excellent birdie putt on 12, but it rolls just past the hole.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Seo is on yet another long par 4 -- the 432-yard 15th hole. This time she misses the fairway and lands in the short rough on the left side.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Paula Creamer still has eight holes left to play. She is seven over par and really looks like she wants to go home. She runs her approach shot on 11 through the green.

Stanford, who has everything to play for, makes the same mistake on 11. She will have a very difficult up and down to save par.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Ryu comes up short of the green on the par-3 12th.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Seo has a blind shot from out of the rough on 15. The green is on top of a hill, and she is down in a valley. After a long consultation with her caddie, she lets fly. But the ball isn't hit quite hard enough and it comes up just short of the green. She will have a long uphill chip shot for birdie.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Stanford chunks her chip shot on 11, and she is about 25-30 feet short of the hole. The NBC folks think that she should have spent more time thinking about the shot.

Ryu runs her chip shot on 12 well past the hole.

  36. Leaders as of 7 PM MDT:

    T1. H.K. Seo (KOR): -4 (68 holes)
    T1. A. Stanford: -4 (64)
    3. S.Y. Ryu (KOR): -3 (65)
    4. C. Kerr: -1 (66)

  37. Ryu bogeys the 12th to fall to 2 under.

Stanford misses her par putt on 11.

Seo makes an excellent ship shot on 15 and she has a great chance to save par.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Morgan Pressel finishes her tournament at 7 over.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Stanford has a tricky three-footer for bogey. She takes her time -- and misses it. So after putting her drive in the middle of the fairway on 11, she ends up with a double bogey that drops her to two under par.

The tournament is now Seo's to lose.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Seo has a four-footer to save par. If she makes this, she will have a two shot lead and only three more holes to play.

Given that her putting has been tremendous all day, it is not surprising that she knocks it in.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Kerr knocks in a difficult five-footer to save par on 13 and remain at 1 under.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Stanford's tee shot on the par-three 12 goes through the green. She will have a not-too-difficult chip shot. She should save par, but she needs birdies.

Tseng finishes her round at six over par.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Seo's tee shot on the par-3 16th just barely clears the bunker in front of the green. She will have a good shot for a birdie that would basically lock up the championship.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Leaders at 7:12 MDT:

    1. H.K. Seo (KOR): -4 (69 holes)
    T2. S.Y. Ryu (KOR): -2 (66)
    T2. A. Stanford: -2 (65)
    4. C. Kerr: -1 (67)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Seo now with the birdie putt to lock this tournament up. It looks like about 10-12 feet. But she rolls it past on the right side, and she will have to settle for par.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I took a break in response to a phone call from Number1 son. But we just had a huge sequence.

Stanford bogeyed the 13th hole to drop to 1 under.

Ryu had a long par putt on 14 -- which she made -- to stay at 2 under.

And Seo -- who has been rock-solid all day -- missed a very short par putt on 17 to drop to 3 under.

Seo now has to play 18 -- the hardest hole on the course.

  47. Leaders as of 7:42 MDT:

    1. H.K. Seo (KOR): -3 (71 holes)
    2. S.Y. Ryu (KOR): -2 (68)
    T3. C. Kerr: -1 (68)
    T3. A. Stanford: -1 (67)

  48. Something happened to Stanford on that 11th green. She just looks terrible out there.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Now it's raining pretty hard. This becomes more and more like Mario Golf.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Just as Seo goes into her backswing on the 18th hole, the Will Rogers memorial chimes start marking 7:45 PM. But Seo maintains her concentration, and hits a tremendous shot that carries the water and bounces onto the 18th green. If she can get down in two putts, she will finish at 3 under par, and that number will be very difficult to match.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Stanford had a 60-70 foot putt for birdie on 14. She leaves it about 15-20 feet short, and that will be another bogey. She has just completely collapsed.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Stanford does bogey the 14th. So, let's recap.

Stanford hit her drive into the 11th fairway. At that point she was 3 under for the round and 4 under for the tournament. Here is what she has done since:

    11: double bogey
    12: par
    13: bogey
    14: bogey

So long and thanks for playing.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Seo, putting through the wind and rain, leaves her birdie attempt about 2-3 feet short.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Seo makes her putt on 18.

For the day she shot 68+68=136 -- six under par. Just an amazing performance under the circumstances.

    ReplyDelete
  55. And now it's getting too dark to see, and they are going to stop play. They will re-start at 8 AM MDT tomorrow morning.
