Qualifying has begun for the 2011-2012 UEFA Champions' League. The Bulgarian champion, Litex Lovech, represents the town of Lovech, population 36,296 (about the same as Paducah).
Litex Lovech has to make it through three rounds to qualify for the Champions' League proper: the Second Qualifying Round, the Third Qualifying Round, and the Playoff Round. Last year, Litex survived the Second Qualifying Round, but not the Third.
This year, Litex has again made it through the Second Qualifying Round. Litex played FK Mogren, the champion of Montenegro. Litex won the first leg in Montenegro 2-1, and then cruised to a 3-0 victory at home for a 5-1 aggregate win.
Next up, Litex takes on Wisla Krakow, the champion of Poland. The first leg will be played in Lovech on July 26, with the second leg in Krakow on August 3. The team with the most total goals will advance to the Playoff Round.
Appreciate the Bulgaria love.
