We were in Covington for a funeral at an episcopal church last night. My wife met a woman who told her that she has an adult son and daughter. The son "went to a little college in Kentucky." It turned out to be Murray State. The mom wasn't happy with Murray State because she said the son had become a Baptist there, gone to Taiwan on a missionary trip and gotten married and had a baby there. The daughter had gone to Centre College. The mom wasn't happy with Centre because she said the daughter had double-majored in psychology and philosophy and come back home an atheist.
"You fell into, like, the Oh-est 'Oh, Kentucky' story in Heath Post history," I told my wife.
As a postscript, I'll add that, while serving myself some garlic/chick-pea salad at the Lexington Whole Foods a few hours ago, I was joined at the salad bar by a lunch browser in a Florida Gators T-shirt. He seemed to be wearing it ironically.
The end.
This was a great story. One can only say, "Oh, Kentucky."
