Cabrera bogeys 16 to fall back to 9 under, and he is surely done at last. Schwartzel's drive on 17 went into the rough, but his second shot is great and he will have a chance for a birdie to take the lead.
T1. A. Scott (AUS): -12 (71 holes)
T1. C. Schwartzel (RSA): -12 (70)
3. J. Day (AUS): -11 (71)
T4. T. Woods: -10 (72)
T4. G. Ogilvy (AUS): -10 (72)
T4. L. Donald (ENG): -10 (72)
T4. K.J. Choi (KOR): -10 (70)
Choi bogeys 17 to drop back to 9 under, and that's probably it for him.
ReplyDeleteScott reaches the 18th green in two, but he will have a very long putt for birdie.
ReplyDeleteOfficially rooting for Schwartzel now to deny Scott's horrible putter.
ReplyDeleteNow Schwartzel has a chance to take the lead. He birdied 15, and 16. AND HE BIRDIES 17! This is actually one of the greatest charges in the history of the Masters. He was two shots behind after Scott's birdie on 16, and now he is in the lead.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if Scott knows that he really needs to make his putt on 18.
ReplyDeleteI'm rooting for Schwartzel to deny the Australians.
ReplyDeleteLeaderboard:
ReplyDelete1. C. Schwartzel: -13 (17)
2. A. Scott: -12 (17)
3. J. Day: -11 (17)
T4. T. Woods: -10 (18)
T4. G. Ogilvy: -10 (18)
T4. L. Donald: -10 (18)
And the putter, yes.
ReplyDeleteSchwartzel hits a perfect drive down the middle on 18.
ReplyDeleteOK, can the silly putter come through one more time? Scott has a long putt all the way across the 18th green. He lines it up, sends it on its way . . . and it just slides past.
ReplyDeleteToo bad, so sad.

Luckily I've been able to switch to the .com coverage of Schwartzel coming in.
ReplyDeleteSo now here's Jason Day. He must make this birdie putt to get to 12 under. It's almost exactly the same putt that Weiskopf missed in 1975.
ReplyDeleteBut Day nails it! He finishes birdie-birdie to get to 12 under par. He shoots a 32 on the back nine.
Scott makes his putt to finish at -12.
So Woods, Ogilvy, and Donald are finally beaten, and now we wait to see what Schwartzel will do.
I just want to point out that if the last rounds we've seen by Schwartzel, Day, or Scott had been played by a truly famous golfer, it would be regarded as one of the greatest rounds in Masters history.
ReplyDeleteIt's all experience.
ReplyDeleteYes, to your point, though.
ReplyDeleteSchwartzel, totally unfazed by the drama ahead of him, fires his second shot to the middle of the 18th fairway. If he can get down in two putts, he will be the Masters champion. If not, we will have to hear a lot more about the history of Australian golf.
ReplyDeleteI think this is one of the great underrated effects of Tiger Woods and part of the reason why it's so important for him to play well ... the opportunity seems to raises other guys (Rocco Mediate, Bob May, etc.)
ReplyDeleteBy the way, Bo Van Pelt finished at 8 under, so Tiger is officially Low American.
ReplyDeleteFor what it's worth, I think Kentucky has the same effect on the NCAA basketball tournament that Tiger has on PGA tournaments.
ReplyDeleteGet a shave, putter boy!
ReplyDeleteHere we go, clearing the air for Jim Nantz ...
ReplyDeleteGood Grief! Charl Schwarzel is the Masters champion!
ReplyDeleteAnd CHARL SCHWARTZEL HOLES HIS LAST PUTT ON 18 FOR BIRDIE!
ReplyDeleteHE FINISHES WITH FOUR BIRDIES IN A ROW TO WIN THE TOURNAMENT BY TWO SHOTS!!
He shoots a 66, the low round of the day.
I'm sure we will never hear from him again -- when was the last time you heard of Louis Oosthuizen? -- but this is truly one of the all-time great performances in Masters history.
This time, a hug. This time, a hug.
ReplyDeleteOK, I'm off to have dinner. I don't have much interest in the green jacket ceremony.
ReplyDeleteNantz, in fact, just mentioned Oosthuizen.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great coverage, GoHeath!
