Adam Scott's silly long putter saves his par with a 10-foot putt on 15, and he retains the lead. Day ended up with a five-foot putt for par, which he makes:

T2. T. Woods: -10 (72)
T2. G. Ogilvy (AUS): -10 (71)
T2. L. Donald (ENG): -10 (70)
T2. J. Day (AUS): -10 (69)

  1. Ogilvy does get up and down on 18 to tie Tiger for the clubhouse lead.

  2. Schwartzel, the last guy at 10 under with a chance to play 15, bounces his second shot through the green. But he has a good chance for birdie.

  3. But Adam Scott and his silly long putter are about to win the Masters. Scott just hit a perfect shot on 16 and he is only two or three feet away from a birdie that will give him a two-shot lead with two holes left.

  4. Day tries to match Scott on 16, but his ball rolls into the back corner of the green.

  5. Bo Van Pelt, we hardly knew ye. He follows up his bogey on 16 with a bogey on 17 -- a pretty fair symbol of American golf other than Woods and Mickelson.

  6. OK, so let's review how Adam Scott got here. At the beginning of the day, he was at 7 under -- five shots behind McIlroy. He birdied 2, bogeyed 5, birdied 7 and 8 to finish the front nine at 9 under par. On the back nine, he has birdied 11 and 14 -- and taken no bogeys. With this birdie on 16, he will be five under for the day and 12 under for the tournament.

  7. Scott is a former UNLV Golfin' Rebel.

  8. Scott is 30 years old. He has won 7 tournaments on the PGA Tour, and 7 tournaments on the European Tour. He has always been one of those guys who was going to be great someday, and it would appear that this is the day.

  9. Schwartzel does birdie 15 to move to 11 under par. So Scott's not totally out of the woods yet.

  10. Scott makes his birdie. Current leaderboard:

    1. A. Scott: -12 (16)
    2. C. Schwartzel: -11 (15)
    T3. T. Woods: -10 (18)
    T3. G. Ogilvy: -10 (18)
    T3. J. Day: -10 (16)
    T3. K.J. Choi: -10 (15)

  11. I would definitely like to have one of those translating phones.

  12. Just a reminder that McIlroy is 7 over for the day. If he pars out, he will shoot 79. In some ways, that could be the most important result of today's activities. He was 11 under through 9 holes, and if he had simply birdied 13 and 15 -- and parred everything else, he would have won the tournament.

  13. Scott's drive on 17 misses the fairway off to the left.

  14. Donald bogeyed the 17th to fall back to 9 under. His approach shot on 18 comes out of a fairway bunker -- and hits the flagstick! -- but then bounds away to the fringe.

  15. I'm on Masters.com watching the 15 & 16 coverage so I'm relying on you guys after they pass through here.

  16. Cabrera birdies 15 to move to 10 under.

  17. Somehow McIlroy made another bogey and he is now looking at an 80.

  18. Oh, man. McIlroy ... I was certain that they were showing that No. 15 par putt on delay because he made it. Alas, ... 4-under.

  19. Schwartzel's experience really shining through here.

  20. CHARL SCHWARTZEL HOLES A LONG BIRDIE PUTT ON 16 TO MOVE INTO A TIE FOR THE LEAD!

  21. Scott's tee shot on 17 actually ended up in a greenside bunker on the 7th hole. He pitched out into the fairway, but he is suddenly in huge trouble.

  22. Choi cannot match Schwartzel's birdie, and he remains at 10 under.

  23. The European Challenge is not finished! Luke Donald HOLES OUT FROM OFF THE GREEN! Just like they always do in the Ryder Cup. He finishes at 10 under, tied with Woods and Ogilvy in the clubhouse.

  24. Luke Donald Nation is having a very wild afternoon.

  25. I was wrong about Scott. He wasn't in the fairway, but in a greenside bunker. He pitches out, and it will be up to the silly long putter to save par.

  26. I look exactly like Angel Cabrera these days. My big goal is to get into K.J. Choi shape!

  27. OK, so who is Charl Schwartzel? He is a 26-year-old South African who has won 7 tournament on the European tour. He's playing on the PGA tour in 2011. He's currently 77th on the money list.

  28. Adam Scott's putter is a disgrace. The Augusta National folks should be getting together in some back, knotty-pine room of the clubhouse and outlawing it here in the next 20 minutes.

  29. Jason Day rolls in a long birdie putt on 17, and he moves to 11 under par!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Can the silly long putter do it for Adam Scott? He's about 20 feet away from par. He lines it up, strokes the putt -- and it goes in!

He remains at 12 under, and with that shot he probably sinks the chances of everyone at 10 under.

  31. So here's how Adam Scott played the 17th hole:

    1. Drive into a greenside bunker on 7.
    2. Pitch into a greenside bunker on 17.
    3. Bunker shot to within 20 feet
    4. Hole the putt with the silly long putter.

  32. This jive putter has ruined what might've been one of the greatest afternoons in sports history.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Jason Day was 8 under at the turn, but he has birdied 12, 13, and 17. If he can birdie 18, he could win the Masters.
