A solid start for McIlroy, and Jim Nantz's old college buddy has taken over the Low American spot:
1. R. McIlroy (NIR): -8 (22 holes)
T2. K.J. Choi (KOR): -7 (30)
T2. A. Quiros (ESP): -7 (28)
4. F. Couples: -6 (33)
T5. Y.E. Yang (KOR): -5 (35)
T5. R. Barnes: -6 (34)
By the way, Ricky Barnes is having a very odd round. He birdied the par-5 2d, the very difficult par-3 4th and 6th holes, the par-5 13th, and the tricky par-4 14th. But he bogeyed two relatively easy par-5s -- the 8th and the 15th -- and he also bogeyed the 10th and the 12th. It all nets out to one under for the day, but it hasn't felt like that.
Mickelson is still 2 under through 12. Woods is still on the first hole.
