The last time we checked on the European Champions' League the Euros were down to the quarterfinals. Here's who is left:
Tottenham Hotspur (ENG)
Chelsea (ENG)
Manchester United (ENG)
Real Madrid (ESP)
Barcelona (ESP)
Shakhtar Donetsk (UKR)
Internazionale (ITA)
Schalke 04 (GER)
In the quarters, Spurs drew Real Madrid, while Chelsea and Man Utd drew each other. This draw represented the end of the road for the two London squads, because Spurs have no chance against Real Madrid, and Man Utd doesn't lose to teams from England. And that is certainly how things look after the first leg of the quarter-finals. Here were the scores (home team listed first):
Real Madrid 4 - 0 Spurs
Chelsea 0 - 1 Man Utd
Barcelona 5 - 1 Shakhtar Donetsk
Internazionale 2 - 5 Schalke 04
Given that Chelsea has no chance of beating Man Utd in the second leg at Old Trafford, we can safely declare that these four matches are over. Man Utd will be favored to beat the Schalke/Inter winner and advance to the final, while the semi-final between Barca and Real Madrid will probably be the most anticipated even in European sports for the whole year. The winner of that game will beat Man Utd (or Schalke) on May 28th.
