This 1980 debut album comes in at number 91 on the Best of the 80's list. In many ways this is a tale of two albums. Take the opening song "Precious" which is heavily inspired by Patti Smith and contrast that with a song like "Brass in Pocket" which is a pretty straight up pop tune and you'll see what I mean.
This makes the album a bit difficult to get into initially but once you realize they are a bit all over the place you get comfortable with what's going on and you realize the strength of the songwriting.
This album has two of the Pretenders best songs in "Kid" and "Brass in Pocket" and when the Pretenders are on they are hard to beat.
I could either see picking songs off of here to put on an 80's mix tape, or I could see putting this on a pretty Saturday while you do spring cleaning.
Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 3 out of 5 stars for Pretty Good.
My first favorite song of the week.
ReplyDeleteA short reign for the Pretenders.
