Sitting at number 77 on the Best of the 80's list is this 1989 solo debut from Tom Petty. This album produced a couple of big hits for Petty both co-written by Jeff Lynne of ELO fame.
The sound as a whole and especially on the Lynne songs are very stylized and clean when compared to early Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers work. In many ways I would compare it to the same tweaking that was done with Bonnie Raitt to bring her to an older mainstream audience.
I would say if you want to buy a Tom Petty album get the 1979 Damn the Torpedoes. Still Full Moon Fever did what Petty and Lynne wanted and it works as a complete album, just a bit soft.
This would be a good driving album I would think.
Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 2 out of 5 stars for Not Bad.
I can't wait until The Heath Post matures past this plucky, outsider stage and gets some Jeff Lynne, make-it-mainstream treatment in the 2030s or so. I'm looking forward to being rich.
