Coming in at number 3 on the Best of the 70's list is this 1979 release from The Clash.
I'm not the biggest Clash fan in the world, and honestly I never seek out this album to listen to, but I still can appreciate why it sits at number 3 on this list. I've cut on experimental rock before on this blog and often I find it unlistenable. In many ways this is the ultimate in experimental rock, but it works because they are experimenting to ultimately create pop tunes. Yes they are blending funk, reggae, jazz, R&B, etc. but they manage to craft all of these sounds into solid pop tunes.
They also manage to do it with a youthful, angry voice that brought a real consciousness to the punk movement and sort of killed it at the same time. This isn't a full on political assault of an album, but it has its moments, and those moments tend to be the best on the album.
If you want to hear what killed punk then throw this album on.
Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 2 out of 5 stars for Not Bad.
I really like the song "London Calling," and I think this is one of the great album covers of all time. I don't think I've ever heard anything else from this album.
