Kentucky's girls' basketball state tournament resumes noon Central today at Western Kentucky University's E.A. Diddle Arena in Bowling Green. Everything's on iHigh.com.
Interesting how the bracket is playing out with four teams from a jagged gash through the commonwealth's midsection comprising the upper half and teams from points west and east (Murray, Inez, Mount Vernon and Manchester) battling it out in the bottom.
Today's games:
Bowling Green vs. Louisville DuPont Manual, noon Central
Louisville Butler vs. Marion County, 1:30 p.m.
Inez Sheldon Clark vs. Calloway County, 6:30 p.m.
Rockcastle County vs. Clay County, 8 p.m.
First round:
Bowling Green 58, Walton-Verona 32
Louisville DuPont Manual 78, Crittenden County 40
Louisville Butler Traditional 42, Perry County Central 40
Marion County 55, Montgomery County 41
Inez Sheldon Clark 74, Boyd County 59
Calloway County 62, Newport Central Catholic 57
Rockcastle County 55, Madison Central 52
Clay County 61, Owensboro Catholic 48
On The Joe B & Denny Show, Coach Hall just said he thinks Bowling Green-Manual might turn out to be the best game of the whole tournament. "Two great teams," Joe B. said.
ReplyDeleteSounds like Diddle Arena's getting lively. Near the end of Wednesday's win over Walton-Verona, Lady Purple fans were said to be chanting, "No school Fri-day!"
ReplyDeleteI was told that the theme of one of Bowling Green Senior High's 1985-86 dances was Pat Benetar's "Sex as a Weapon."
ReplyDelete"What's a Pur-ple?!?"
ReplyDeleteGood start for the "home" team: 8-3, Bowling Green, with 4:07 to play in the first quarter.
ReplyDelete12-6, Bowling Green, through one quarter.
ReplyDeleteI'd forgotten C-J's Jason Frakes is a Purple.
12-12.
ReplyDeleteI really wish this whole story had just been a Q&A with Fields about why she isn't coming to WKU next fall.
ReplyDelete22-21, Lady Purples, with less than three minutes to go in the first half ...
ReplyDeleteWKU, UK, U of L and Duke coaches were reportedly courting Owensboro Catholic's Becca Greenwell last night.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, at the end of that story, The Daily News quotes Rockcastle County's coach as saying, "Free throws and layups win ball games." You hear a lot of coaches saying that "defense wins games," or "rebounding wins games," or "defense and rebounding win games," etc. I don't think I've ever heard another coach say, "Free throws and layups win games."
27-23, BG, at halftime. This is a heck of a game.
ReplyDeleteManual's shooting 30.8 percent from the field and has missed all four of its three-point attempts; Bowling Green, 52.4 percent and five of nine.
Manual seven of 12 on free throws, Bowling Green zero of two. Not sure about comparative laysup.
The Lady Purples' list its starters as four guards and one forward. Star Adrienne Tarrance, one of the guards, has three fouls; two others have two each.
ReplyDelete34-30, Manual ... end of third quarter ... BG has missed all three of its three-pointer attempts since halftime ... Tarrance four fouls, two other Lady Purple starters with three each ...
ReplyDeleteI believe that free throws and layups do win ball games -- although sometimes, 3-pointers win ball games.
ReplyDeleteGO LAKERS!
38-30, Manual ...
ReplyDelete6:16 to go, 42-31 and Tarrance and her four fouls are back on the court ...
ReplyDelete5:34 to go, BG turnover ... four Lady Purple points in the second half ...
ReplyDelete1:36 to play. Bowling Green got a free throw at 3:54 but still hasn't scored another field goal since there was 5:22 to play in the third. 46-32.
ReplyDeleteFinal: DuPont Manual 46, Bowling Green 33. Lady Purples got another free throw with five seconds to play.
ReplyDeleteHooray for Louisville!
Speaking of things I don't think I've ever heard a coach say, here's what Bowling Green's coach said at the start of the post-game press conference (before saying a bunch of nice things about her team): "I thought we kind of gave up."
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, back in Madisonville, my wife just brought me a big plate of home-made hush puppies!
ReplyDeleteNewCath coach Ron Dawn, gracious in defeat yesterday, via Ricky Martin in Murray's Ledger & Times: “We lost to a really good team. I don’t think it’s like we came down here and we just lost, I feel like we lost to a really good team. They have a great player, a great coach and I told my team we have nothing to be ashamed of.”
ReplyDeleteOh, by the way, I want to point out that Bowling Green's coach also was gracious in defeat and said nice things about Manual, too.
ReplyDelete7-3, Marion County, with less than four minutes to go in the first quarter against Louisville Butler Traditional ...
ReplyDelete15-all, 3:58 to play in the first half ...
ReplyDelete25-16, Marion County, at the half.

ReplyDelete26-24, Calloway County over Inez Sheldon Clark ... 2:39 to go in the first half ... GO, LAKERS!
ReplyDeleteSome things about Calloway County that I know not enough about:
ReplyDelete-- Wrather West Kentucky Museum at Murray State;
-- Forrest C. Pogue Special Collections Library, also at Murray State;
-- popcorn ("approximately 12 million pounds are produced annually, providing 10 percent of the nation's popcorn," Robert A. Powell in 1989's Kentucky Counties), and
-- Nathan B. Stubblefield's wireless-radio demonstration in Murray in 1892 and patent application of 1907.
Sheldon Clark 28, Calloway County 26, at the half ... the Lady Lakers' star, Fields, missed the end of the half, sitting with three fouls ...
ReplyDeleteFields played 12 minutes but took only two field-goal attempts and scored only five points in the first half ... the KUSSRN commentator (who is not Jaime Walz-Richey for this game) credits Sheldon Clark's one-on-one defender with doing a good job of denying passes to Fields ...
ReplyDeleteCheck that! The KUSSRN is Jaime Walz-Richey, the Fort Thomas Highlands coach and former Lady Topper, for this game.
ReplyDeleteOh, my ... "Magic Bus" by The Who is playing as a commercial bumper for KUSSRN ... I hadn't heard this yet during the tournament, so this must've been inspired by the "Oh, Kentucky" mention of the song earlier this afternoon.
ReplyDeleteWow. So excellent. This was my favorite piece of recorded music from about June 1986 through February 1987 or so.
ReplyDelete34-29, Sheldon Clark, inside four minutes of the third quarter ...
ReplyDeleteCalloway County appears antsy ... consecutive steals yield two straight poor field-goal attempts ...
ReplyDeleteFields make and make on two free throws. A 67-percent free-throw shooter entering this game, Fields has made all five of her tries in this game: 34-31. Also has nine rebounds ...
ReplyDeleteFields jumper: 35-31. 1:42 in third ...
ReplyDeleteFields alters shot, rebounds miss, drives, fouled ... make and make: 35-33.
ReplyDeleteCome on, girl--switch to WKU.
Fields rebound ...
ReplyDeleteLADY LAKER 3 IN THE LAST SECONDS OF THE THIRD QUARTER: 38-37, Calloway, with eight minutes to go!
ReplyDelete44-39, Calloway County ...
ReplyDeleteSheldon Clark looks winded, and Neal Bradley's play-by-play is great.
ReplyDelete46-41, Lady Lakers ... five minutes to play ...
ReplyDelete3:31 ... 50-44, Calloway County leads and calls timeout ...
ReplyDelete43 seconds to go ... 57-48, Calloway ... AND FIELDS BLOCKS SHELDON CLARK'S SHOT, CATCHES THE BALL, LAYUP, FOULED!!!
ReplyDeleteFT GOOD: 60-48!
That's it! Calloway County advances!
ReplyDeleteRockcastle County 41, Clay County 24, in the fourth quarter ...
ReplyDeleteOf Rockcastle County and Mount Vernon, the WPA guide says, "Fox, coon and 'possum hunting are favorite sports in this region where most farmers own three or four hounds apiece. Each hunter bets on his own dogs, and the hunt usually lasts from one to three days. According to a local sportsman, when the dogs announce by loud barks that a coon has been 'treed,' the hunters gather under the tree to wait till morning when they 'either chop the tree down or shoot the coon out.'"
ReplyDeleteBack to Calloway County ...
ReplyDeleteWPA: "Nathan B. Stubblefield, a native of Murray, achieved distinction here as a pioneer experimentalist in the field of wireless telephony. It is alleged locally that he was the first to transmit the human voice successfully through the medium that is now known as radio. The experiment was performed in 1902 across the swampy wood that is now the college campus. As often happens in connection with important scientific pioneering, a series of controversies, claims, counterclaims and recriminations has arisen over the question of Stubblefield's primacy int he radio field. Stubblefield's basic patent was not recorded until May 12, 1908, six years after the climax of his experimentation and twenty years after a patent covering the same essentials had been issued to Lucius J. Phelps of New York." (385)
Rockcastle, 45-27 ...
ReplyDeleteIt's a shame that the National Scouting Museum didn't make it in Murray, but I have no one to blame but me and mine. My dad was a scoutmaster; my mom led Girl Scouts; both of my brothers and I were Boy Scouts, and my sister was a Girl Scout. The museum was open from 1986 through 2002, and the six of us combined for a total of zero visits.
ReplyDeleteFinal: Rockcastle County 40, Clay County 27. Hooray for Mount Vernon!
ReplyDeleteI love The Heath Post.
