Kentucky's girls' basketball state tournament resumes noon Central today at Western Kentucky University's E.A. Diddle Arena in Bowling Green. Everything's on iHigh.com.
Today's games:
Inez Sheldon Clark vs. Boyd County, noon Central
Calloway County vs. Newport Central Catholic, 1:30
Madison Central vs. Rockcastle County, 6:30
Clay County vs. Owensboro Catholic, 8
Yesterday's:
Bowling Green 58, Walton-Verona 32
Louisville DuPont Manual 78, Crittenden County 40
Louisville Butler Traditional 42, Perry County Central 40
Marion County 55, Montgomery County 41
I'm looking forward to listening to what I expect to be a Calloway County-friendly radio broadcast of today's second game, at WestKentuckyStar.com.
ReplyDeleteIt's likely that Pamela Scott Johnson was playing off the Cardinals' nickname, but it's possible that Sheldon Clark's team flew from Inez to Bowling Green for today's game (scheduled to tip in just minutes).
ReplyDeleteThe Lady Cardinals are up, 10-5.
ReplyDeleteJoshua Bell reports in Ashland's Daily Independent that Sheldon Clark beat Boyd County, 63-47, in a game in Inez just three weeks ago and that Boyd County's coach, Pete Fraley, was ejected after being whistled for two technical fouls.
Joshua Bell in The Daily Independent also clears up my confusion on the Lady Cardinals' Inez-to-Bowling Green trip: "... Sheldon Clark traveled to Richmond on Tuesday afternoon to practice at EKU. They practiced in the Bowling Green area on Wednesday. (Coach Darrin) Rice, who made good on a promise to shave his head if his team won the region at a community pep rally on Tuesday, said he didn’t feel like the early departure would bother his players. ..."
ReplyDeleteCarla Booth, who will be back in Richmond next fall, playing for Eastern Kentucky University, has six points, and Sheldon Clark leads, 14-10.
ReplyDelete22-14, Sheldon Clark, as Katelyn Newsome scores a nice pullup jumper on the break and then immediately follows up with a layup off a steal. Our main man in Ashland, Joshua Bell, reported in that same, rich Daily Independent story that she's the daughter of a Sheldon Clark assistant coach, Robin Harmon-Newsome, "who is a Dawahares/KHSAA Hall of Fame member, (and) played in four consecutive Sweet Sixteen tournaments and led the state in scoring in 1978, averaging better than 32 points per game."
ReplyDeleteScott Thompson, working the sideline on the KHSAA iHigh.com telecast today, just said that Boyd County's coach, Pete Fraley, broke his clipboard over his knee.
Now 28-16, with 2:38 to go in the first half ...
ReplyDeleteHey, FANTASTIC! The play-by-play guy today is HeathPostdotcom Twitter follower Neal Bradley! Maybe we'll get a mention in the telecast.
ReplyDeleteBoyd County slices the lead to 31-24 at the half as an eighth-grader hits a three-pointer, is fouled and makes the free throw.
ReplyDeleteBoyd's coach is so hoarse during his interview on the way to the locker room that it's barely understandable. He said some of his players appear to not want to take any shots.
Our man in Ashland, Joshua Bell, is a Sheldon Clark grad, and he thinks Carla Booth (the EKU signee who has 15 first-half points) is the program's all-time great.
ReplyDeleteIda Bowen, the 1992 Miss Basketball from Inez, was a pretty darned valuable player on some pretty darned good Lady Topper teams. She played both guard and forward spots at different points for coaches Paul Sanderford and Steve Small.
ReplyDelete51-41, Sheldon Clark, through three quarters ...
ReplyDeleteSheldon Clark is in Martin County, which was one of the last Kentucky counties to be formed--number 116 of 120, created in 1870. Inez, the county seat, was originally called "Eden," but it had to change names because an Eden post office already existed in Kentucky.
ReplyDelete"Several mining companies are large employers in the area and their use of safe and modern equipment has allowed the land to be reclaimed and reused. The Big Sandy Airport and Big Sandy Penitentiary are built on reclaimed land and serve as examples of these technological advancements."
That paragraph was written by Wendell Berr- ... oh, no, sorry ... Evelyn Cassady, president of the Martin County Historical Society, in Clark's Kentucky Almanac and Book of Facts 2006.
5:17 to go ... 62-47, Lady Cardinals ...
ReplyDelete73-54, Sheldon Clark ... all subs and free throws now ...
ReplyDeleteAll the Travis-haters in Madisonville had to be feeling conflicted over the last few minutes, as Travis Ford's Oklahoma State Cowboys had the Kansas Jayhawks on the ropes in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tournament. But Travis's guys blew the last shot of the game, and KU survives 63-62.
ReplyDeleteTwo other interesting college scores:
ReplyDelete1. In the Big East quarterfinals, #1 seed Pitt was stunned by #9 seed UConn, 76-74.
2. In the ACC quarterfinals, UVA had a 53-43 lead with only 42 seconds to go, but lost to Miami (Fla.) 69-62 in overtime.
"If that Travis Ford is so smart, why can't his team get off a decent shot at the end of the game? He called time out for that?"
ReplyDeleteUVA fans tend to be very smart people, and they have a great deal of experience in dealing with crushing defeats -- like blowing a 10-point lead in 42 seconds at the ACC tournament. Today's debacle against Miami led to the following exchange on the UVA message board:
ReplyDeleteGodfather: "This just confirms it. The Rotunda {a very important building at UVA} was built ancient indian burial grounds."
Hoomer Simpson: "At this point, it's not enough that our school was built on burial grounds. It had to have been built on actual, alive indians."
In the first game of the SEC Tournament, Georgia blows out Auburn 69-51. The Bulldogs will play Alabama in tomorrow's quarter-finals.
ReplyDelete22-16, NewCath ahead of Calloway County in today's second game at Diddle ... about three minutes to go in the half ...
ReplyDelete"Laker nation."
ReplyDeleteThree-pointer at the buzzer by Calloway County pulls the Lakers to within 22-19 at the half.
ReplyDeleteChannel 6 Tweets that NewCath went the last 5:56 of the half without a field goal.
ReplyDeleteOh, man, NKysportsblog.com says that Calloway's buzzer 3 was from beyond midcourt!
ReplyDeleteSheldon Clark's win today was the school's first-ever at the Sweet Sixteen, Tweets The Herald-Leader.
ReplyDeleteCoach Scott Sivills of Calloway County just said on the KUSSRN halftime show that he told Karlee Wilson, the girl who hit the midcourt 3, "That's a shot you're going to be telling your kids, grandkids and great-grandkids about." Good for him.
ReplyDelete5:10 to go in the third quarter ... Calloway County now up, 25-24 ...
ReplyDeleteNow: 27-24. That's a 15-0 Laker run ...
Coach Sivills to Ricky Martin of Murray's Ledger & Times in a story yesterday: "We can’t go in and freak out, and we haven’t panicked in the first 31 games, why panic now? I fell like if we win our first game, we can get to Saturday, and that’s what our goal is.”
ReplyDeleteCalloway (30-1 on the season) now leads, 29-24, with 4:11 to go in third, and NewCath calls timeout.
Jaime Walz-Richey: "Good job by Coach Dawn (NewCath's Ron) coming out of the timeout" ... out of the play design, NewCath gets a field goal and foul (free throw good), and it's 29-27 ... 2:51 to go in the third quarter ...
ReplyDelete34-30, Lakers ...
ReplyDeleteThis time, Calloway's half-court shot misses, and the Lakers' lead is 34-33 heading into the final eight minutes of action in Bowling Green.
ReplyDeleteGO, LAKERS!
ReplyDeleteI'm picking the winner of this game to beat Sheldon Clark and advance to the semis.
At halftime of the SEC tournament, Ole Miss leads South Carolina 30-26.
ReplyDelete40-37 ... 40-40 ... 42-40 ... 42-42 ...
ReplyDelete3:37 to play, and Calloway County is headed to the line as a NewCath player fouls out ...
Miss ...
ReplyDelete44-42 ... 44-44 ... Lakers headed back to the line ...
ReplyDeleteMake ...
ReplyDeleteWho's score are you putting first here, the Lakers?
ReplyDeleteAnd another make after an icing timeout ...
ReplyDelete48-44, Calloway County!
ReplyDelete48-all, and the Lakers return to the line ...
ReplyDeleteMake ...
ReplyDeleteMiss ... (the girl who shot, an all-stater who has signed with West Virginia, has made 10 of 13 in the game) ... 49-48, Lakers.
ReplyDeleteNewCath to the line: Make and miss. 49-49 ... minute to go ...
ReplyDelete1:05, precisely ... timeout ...
ReplyDeleteCalloway's all-stater with a dribble drive from beyond the free-throw line ... layup in traffic ... 51-49, Calloway ... 30 points for this girl ...
ReplyDeleteCalloway back to the line ... miss ...
ReplyDeleteMiss ... BUT THE LAKERS REBOUND ... 38 seconds or so ... two-point lead ... NewCath fouls quickly ...
ReplyDeleteMiss ...
ReplyDeleteMiss ... 34 seconds ...
ReplyDelete17.6 seconds to go ... NewCath misses driving jumper but rebounds ... girl who has hit all seven goes to line ... make ... make: 51-51.
ReplyDeleteNewCath fouls!
ReplyDeleteMake and make ... Calloway timeout ... 53-51, Lakers ...
ReplyDeleteThe Calloway all-stater blocks a NewCath try out of bounds ... about 5 seconds to go ... timeout ...
ReplyDeleteJaime Walz-Richey: "Coach Dawn always has great out-of-bounds plays."
ReplyDeleteCalloway foul!
ReplyDeleteNewCath: Make ...
ReplyDeleteAnd make ... 53-53!
ReplyDeleteShe's going to West Virginia?
ReplyDeleteCalloway's buzzer three hits front of rim, backboard and front of rim ... and falls off ... we're headed to overtime!
ReplyDeleteLongest. Basketball Season. Ever.
ReplyDeleteI can't ever remember being involved in so many close games.
In the Big 10 quarter-finals, Northwestern beats Minnesota 75-65. A month or so ago, Tubby Smith's Golden Gophers were 16-4. They have lost 10 of their last 11 games and their record is now 17-14. They haven't scored 70 points in a game since January 26.
ReplyDelete57-53, Calloway County ...
ReplyDeleteYeah, Fields is going to West Virginia. Breaks my heart, too--she's really, really good. Even better than her stats (which are fantastic ... 30 points and about 250 rebounds). NewCath is collapsing on her in defense, and she's making the right pass pretty much every time. Her pass on the last play to set up the near-miss three was unbelievably great.
That said, she just missed two free-throw tries ...
All those fouls down the stretch took me back to NC State's season in the sun.
ReplyDeleteIn the Big East quarter-finals, St. John's got to play all 40 minutes today, but it wasn't enough: they fell to Syracuse 79-73. The Cuse will play UConn in the semis tomorrow night.
ReplyDeleteWe live in an age of wonder.
ReplyDeleteCalloway free throws: Make and ...
ReplyDeleteIn the ACC first round, Boston College beats Wake Forest 81-67. (UVA's meltdown against Miami was also a first round game, not a quarter-final game. The ACC quarterfinals -- like the SEC quarterfinals -- are tomorrow).
ReplyDeleteMake ... 59-53 ...
ReplyDeleteNewCath fouled with 36.8 seconds to play ...
Make and make ... 59-55, Lakers ... 32 seconds and back to the free-throw line ...
ReplyDeleteSTOP FOULING WHEN YOU'RE IN THE LEAD!!!
ReplyDeleteGOOD NIGHT!!!
Miss and make: 60-55.
ReplyDeleteFields's fourth foul. NewCath: Make and make, 60-57.
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteIn whatever the Doral Open is called these days, Matt Kuchar has the early lead -- he is 5 under through six holes. Tiger Woods -- who used to be the greatest athlete I ever saw -- is one over through 9.
ReplyDelete24 seconds, and Calloway County turnover ...
ReplyDeleteHonestly, Calloway would be better served not to play defense at all and simply let the clock run while NewCath goes in for layups. How many FT's has NewCath shot in this game?
ReplyDeleteNewCath airs a 3, and the Lakers are fouled with 5.3 to play ...
ReplyDeleteSee what happens when you don't foul? Sometimes the other team misses.
ReplyDeleteMake and make! Missed NewCath 3! 62-57, Calloway County wins!
ReplyDeleteHooray for Murray!
ReplyDeleteFroggyland: "Averee Fields may be the best girls basketball player ever to play in the First Region."
ReplyDeleteGO LAKERS!!!
ReplyDeleteALL THE WAY!!!
And she sounds completely fantastic in the post-game interview. This just kills me watching her being interviewed at midcourt, near the big red towel.
ReplyDeleteIn other news, the restaurant where my wife and I are working this afternoon is apparently playing the whole Born to Run record. "Tenth-Avenue Freezeout" played, and now "Thunder Road" just started. This is excellent.
ReplyDeleteOh, man. So good.
ReplyDeleteThat guy was on freaking fire.
ReplyDeleteOh, well ... it was still the radio ... a "double-shot." The DJ just let out a big sigh and said, "Man ... great song."
ReplyDeleteI have a good friend who grew up in Tomahawk KY and so I kind of find myself rooting for Inez.
ReplyDeleteThe Daily News has a very fine roundup of notes from yesterday's session, which includes this strikingly honest quote from the coach of vanquished Perry County Central and his decision to allow his star player, Kendall Noble, to come back and play after a first-half injury: "In hindsight, I probably shouldn’t have even tried it. When a kid looks you in the eye and you have that much faith in them anyway, it’s hard to say ‘I’m not going to put you back out there.’”
ReplyDeleteHooray! Thrilled to add a "Tomahawk" label to this post. I also added one for "Album Reviews." If you want to go ahead and accord Born to Run its 5-star status, let it rip, Rube.
ReplyDeleteLoverboy. Oh, well.
ReplyDeleteBruce Springsteen is so great.
I just want to reiterate what a huge win that was for the Lakers. It's very unusual for the 1st region to beat the 6th, 7th, 9th, or 11th regions at the state tournament. Now they get the 15th region next, which should be more their speed.
ReplyDeleteIn the second game of the SEC tournament, Ole Miss cruises past South Carolina 66-55 to set up a rematch with Kentucky tomorrow afternoon. Darrin Horn -- who could have won 500 games in his career if he had stayed at Western Kentucky -- misses the NCAAs yet again.
ReplyDeleteCalloway County's momentum-building, half-court shot at halftime is making the Twitter rounds.
ReplyDeleteThere have been some great, great girls' high-school basketball players from Kentucky: Olmstead's Lillie Mason, Warren Central's Clemette Haskins, Doss's Kim Pehlke, Marshall County's Mary Taylor, Owensboro Apollo's Laurie Townsend, Southern's Lisa Harrison, Sacred Heart's Crystal Kelly, Scott County's Ukari Figgs, Fort Thomas Highlands' Jaime Walz, ... None of them was named McDonald's high-school all-American. Rockcastle County's Sara Hammond was, and she's tipping off momentarily in the Sweet Sixteen.
ReplyDeleteHow did Rockcastle County get a McDonald's High School All-American? And where is she going to college?
ReplyDeleteI just looked it up. She's going to Louisville because UK never made her an offer.
ReplyDeleteYou just can't make this stuff up.
"Rock! Is! Hard!"
ReplyDelete16-16 after one quarter.
ReplyDelete"U of L signee Sara Hammond has 9 points and 4 boards, but on the bench with two fouls," Tweets Michael Compton of The Daily News.
Now I have to root for this girl to fail at Louisville.
ReplyDeleteWhy don't we ever make offers to these people?
OK. Inspired by Eric, I'm now listening to "Born to Run" -- the whole album, all the way through. I don't think I've done this for about five years.
ReplyDeleteIn all seriousness, "Thunder Road" may be the best rock song ever recorded.
ReplyDelete"Night" is an underrated song. It is significantly better, for example, than a number of songs from "The River" that get more attention -- such as "Out in the Street."
ReplyDelete"I hated him / and I hated you when you went away." And then into the guitar solo. Great, great stuff.
ReplyDeleteIn what may be John Pelphrey's last game as Arkansas's head coach, the Tennessee Vols lead Arkansas 37-25 at the half.
ReplyDeleteThere's a great moment in the Sopranos where Tony Soprano asks Christopher -- one of his chief lieutenants -- why he was late for a meeting, and Christopher immediately responds: "The highway's jammed with broken heroes on a last-chance power drive."
ReplyDelete50-49, Rockcastle County, 3:17 to play ...
ReplyDeleteHammond runner: 52-49.
ReplyDelete29 points, 11 rebounds and now she just blocked Madison Central's shot.
25.2 seconds to go ... Rockcastle County, 54-52 ...
ReplyDelete19.7 seconds ... Rockcastle misses a free throw, and Hammond rebounds ... but loses the ball out of bounds ...
ReplyDeleteTwo Madison County misses, both good shots, both close. Rockcastle headed back to the line ... 3.8 seconds ...
ReplyDeleteMake ...
ReplyDeleteMiss ...
ReplyDeleteAnd that's it. ROCK! IS! HARD!
ReplyDeleteSo the 11th Region and the 9th Region are both out in the first round. That is odd.
ReplyDeleteIn the Big East quarterfinals, Notre Dame crushes Cincinnati 89-51. Great effort by the Bearcats.
ReplyDeleteIn the first round of the Big 10 tournament, Penn State beats Indiana 61-55. With a record of 12-20, the Hoosiers will once again miss the Big Dance. But at least they are doing things the right way, and that's what really matters.
ReplyDeleteJohn Pelphrey, coaching for his professional life, has the Razorbacks down by only two points with 50 seconds to go. Arkansas ball.
ReplyDeleteArkansas comes out of the timeout and commits a turnover. I wish they had done that against us. UT makes 2 FTs and they lead 72-68 with less than 30 seconds to play.
ReplyDeleteAnd that's probably it for Pelphrey. UT wins 74-68. Arkansas finishes the year at 18-13, and they will not be dancing. Tennessee, on the other hand, gets a third chance to beat Florida.
ReplyDelete20-10, Clay County over Owensboro Catholic after one quarter of our final first-round game. Catholic scored only two field goals in the first quarter, and it already has a player with three fouls.
ReplyDelete26-18, Clay County, about midway through the second quarter ...
ReplyDelete31.6 seconds to go in the half ... Owensboro Catholic down 30-23 with the ball ...
ReplyDeleteTwo missed 3s, and Clay County is fouled and heading to the line ...
ReplyDeleteHalftime: 32-23, Clay County.
ReplyDeleteWikipedia says The Washington Post identified Clay as Kentucky's unhealthiest county last summer.
ReplyDeleteIf you scroll a up just a bit on that Clay County Wikipedia site, you'll see something about a company called "Waste Not Technologies" and its plan to bring 1,400 jobs to Manchester.
ReplyDelete2:46 in the third, Clay County up eight ...
ReplyDeleteIn December 2009, WKYT reported that Waste Not Technologies had broken ground in Manchester.
ReplyDelete40-30, Clay County ...
ReplyDeleteSo then in January 2010, appears this post at Topix.com: "... All information contained therein can be independent confirmed and verified by any truth-seeking individual, including lazy reporters and city and economic development officials in Manchester, Ky; Bessemer, Ala; Abilene and Herington, Kan; Van Buren County, Mich; and Okmulgee, Okla., who have failed to conduct an independent due diligence or financial audit of Mr. Bennett and his companies. ..."
ReplyDeleteWow! Owensboro Catholic back within three!
ReplyDeleteThrough three quarters: Clay County 40, Owensboro Catholic 37.
ReplyDeleteClay County appears to have this one ... 11 points ahead, less than 40 seconds to go ...
ReplyDeleteUgh ... heart-breaking.
ReplyDeleteAn April 2010 Tulsa World story about delays in Oklahoma, too.
ReplyDeleteFinal: Clay County 61, Owensboro Catholic 48.
ReplyDeleteHooray for Manchester!
And that's it. Nothing more on Waste Not Technologies in Manchester comes up via Google. The following description, dated just last month, appears definitive and particularly discouraging, but, alas, the Web site itself won't come up:

Boo.
Boo, indeed. Bill Estep today in the Lexington Herald-Leader has a heartbreaking obit on the whole Waste Not Technologies/1,500-jobs-to-Manchester saga.
ReplyDelete
