One and done: Boys

The Kentucky boys' basketball tournament is mostly scattered across its rounds of 32 and 16, but one team and its community are already awaiting the Sweet Sixteen.

For Edgewood, today is the first of nine straight of celebrating Dixie Heights' first Ninth Region championship in 54 years without having to worry about actually having to play another game that night. This suggests that the first Edgewood Fire/EMS Friday-night fish fry of this Lenten season--already "famous"--stands to be an unusually happy affair.

For the rest of the KHSAA's boys' survivors, there's still more work to be done between now and March 16. Here are today's games:

First Region, at Murray State--Fulton County vs. Paducah Tilghman and Marshall County vs. Graves County

Second Region, at Hopkinsville High School--Christian County vs. Henderson County and Madisonville-North Hopkins vs. Union County

Third Region championship, at Meade County High School--Muhlenberg County vs. Daviess County

Fourth Region, at Western Kentucky University--Glasgow vs. Bowling Green and Warren Central vs. Monroe County

Fifth Region, at Green County High School--Marion County vs. Bardstown and Elizabethtown vs. Bethlehem

Sixth Region championship, at Bellarmine University--Pleasure Ridge Park vs. Bullitt East

Seventh Region, at Bellarmine University

Eighth Region, at Henry County High School--Oldham County at Henry County and Spencer County vs. North Oldham

10th Region championship, at Mason County High School--Pendleton County vs. Winchester George Rogers Clark

11th Region, at Eastern Kentucky University--Richmond Madison Central vs. Lexington Catholic

12th Region, at Lincoln County High School--Southwestern vs. Mercer County and Pulaski County vs. Wayne County

13th Region championship, at The Arena in Corbin--Bell County vs. Corbin

14th Region, at Memorial Gym in Hazard--Perry County Central vs. Letcher County Central and Knott County Central vs. Estill County

15th Region, at East Kentucky Expo Center in Pikeville--Pike County Central vs. Shelby Valley and Pikeville vs. Betsy Layne

16th Region championship, at Morehead State University--Rowan County vs. Ashland Paul Blazer

*And, as GoHeath confirmed yesterday:

Ninth Region--Edgewood Dixie Heights

  1. Here are the last 10 winners of the 4th Region Title. From this list should take away two messages: (1) Warren Central has a great program and (2) it's really hard to win the 4th Region if you're not from Warren County:

    2010: Warren Cent.
    2009: Bowling Green
    2008: Greenwood
    2007: Warren Cent.
    2006: Warren Cent.
    2005: Warren Cent. (state finalist)
    2004: Warren Cent. (STATE CHAMPS)
    2003: Warren Cent.
    2002: Warren Cent.
    2001: Russellville

  2. And here are the last ten winners of the 5th Region, which tends to be wide open:

    2010: N. Hardin
    2009: Adair Co.
    2008: Bardstown
    2007: Adair Co.
    2006: John Hardin
    2005: Elizabethtown
    2004: Caverna
    2003: N. Hardin
    2002: N. Hardin
    2001: N. Hardin

The last team from the Fifth Region to win the State Title was Elizabethtown. In 2000, Antwain Barbour had one of the best state tournaments ever -- 42 pts in the semi-final against Russellville and 31 pts in the final against Lexington Catholic -- to take E-Town all the way.

  3. Bullitt East blows out PRP 81-58 to win the Sixth Region. This will be the first year since 1965 that Jefferson County sends only one team to the state tournament.

  4. Amazingly, PRP led BEHS 49-48 after three quarters. So in the last 8 minutes of the game Bullitt East outscored PRP 33-9. That is unbelievable.

  5. Lexington Catholic cruised to the 11th Region title with an easy 59-43 victory over Madison Central. Catholic's only problem was that the Madison Central students shot baby powder into the air before the game, causing a 25-minute delay while the floor was mopped and dried.

  6. Mike Fields tweets that George Rogers Clark won the 10th Region title with a 62-40 win over Pendleton Co.

  7. Less than a minute to go in the Third Region final, and Daviess County edges ahead of Muhlenberg County by one. Muhlenberg takes timeout. You can watch live at iHigh.com.

  8. WPSD reports that in the First Region semi-finals, Paducah Tilghman has beaten 68-58. Leonard Smith scored 42 points for Fulton Co., but it wasn't enough.

  11. I'm surprised, by the way, to see how many games in Kentucky H.S. Basketball are going into the 80s. We rarely see scores that high in the DC area.

  12. Daviess nearly commits inbounds violation, gets timeout ... each team has one left ...

    Hancock County gym looks awesome.

  13. 13.9 seconds left ... Daviess County headed to line with 64-63 lead ...

  14. Daviess miss ... Muhlenberg rebound and last timeout ... 10-some-odd seconds to go ...

  15. HeathPostDotCom is tweeting that in the third region, Daviess Co. has a one point lead and the ball against Muhlenberg Co. with 15.6 seconds left in the game.

  16. Two Muhlenberg misses, and Daviess floods the court!

  17. Daviess hangs on to beat Muhlenberg 64-63. Daviess is heading to state for the first time since 2003.

  18. Great coverage from Eric!

  19. That's all for me for now, as I am heading home from the office.

  20. Wait a minute, I'm still here. In the 13th region, Bell County has knocked off Corbin 54-49 to win the regional title. The Bell County Bobcats are going to state for the first time since 1980.

  21. Here are your last 10 champions from the 13th region:

    2010: Corbin
    2009: Corbin
    2008: S. Laurel
    2007: S. Laurel
    2006: S. Laurel
    2005: Rockcastle Co.
    2004: Cumberland
    2003: Rockcastle Co.
    2002: Clay Co.
    2001: Corbin

The last team from the 13th region to win the title was, of course, Richie Farmer's Clay Co. team. They went all the way in 1987.

  22. Regional championship finals from KHSAA.org:

Daviess County 64, Muhlenberg County 63 in the Third
Bullitt East 81, Pleasure Ridge Park 58 in the Sixth
Winchester George Rogers Clark 62, Pendleton County 40 in the 10th
Bell County 54, Corbin 49, in overtime, in Corbin, in the 13th

Herald-Leader Mike Fields has Tweeted that Lexington Catholic outlasted Richmond Madison Central in the 11th Region. This leaves one outlying championship score for tonight: Rowan County vs. Ashland Paul Blazer in the 16th?

  23. That Bell County game went to overtime, by the way. There have been some amazing games so far:

    1. Dixie Heights won the 9th region in 4 overtimes
    2. Bell Co. won the 13th region in overtime
    3. Daviess Co. won the 3d region by one point.

    Just incredible stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  24. And Bell County had to survive OT in Corbin to break Corbin's run of regional championships.

    ReplyDelete
  25. OK, now I'm going home.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Wait, one more score: Aaron Snyder, who tweets as "DindependentPG" tells us that Rowan County has beaten Ashland 64-58 to win the 16th Region. Rowan is going to state for the first time since 2005.
