  1. Joe B & Denny is broadcasting from the Sweet Sixteen. Joe B is so happy, he's almost hard to understand. Everybody who walks by, he's trying to get on the show.

Right now, he's got Wes Strader, "the voice of HIlltopper basketball for 800 years," Joe B said.

"Eight hundred and twenty," Denny said.

Joe B: "Guess who I saw here last night? Clem 'The Gem" Haskins, a great and fine person."

    It's like this all morning.

A little while ago, they had on someone who said they liked Bardstown, "because 'Boo' has them just play--no trash talking." He credited Coach Crum with all of this.

  2. Ah, interesting ... the show is being broadcast from the Rupp Arena food court, specifically. This facility bears more research between now and this afternoon's break for dinner between the afternoon and evening games.

    Arby's
    Mo' Joe's Cafe
    Mr. Kan's Chinese

  5. Joe B called Ronnie Lyons of Mason County High School in Maysville "one of the guttiest little players to ever play for Kentucky."

    ReplyDelete
  6. OK, so I'm having two hot dogs and a Coke for lunch at the game. Between sessions, I will go to Arby's for two chicken cordon bleu sandwiches and a Mountain Dew.

    ReplyDelete
  7. You won't be out of the Arby's line for the first evening tipoff.

    ReplyDelete
  8. The first thing I'm having this morning is an Evans Orchard Fried Apple Pie. No question.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Surely, one of these places has coffee, too. OK, that's my first order of the day: two Evans Orchard Fried Apple Pies and a cup of coffee.

  10. Champ and I have the same teams in the final.

Our picks went 4-0 yesterday, but Daviess Co. trails Rowan Co. 16-9 with 5:12 to go in the 2d quarter.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Courier-Journal's Jason Frakes live: "Daviess County rocking the old-school jerseys with 'COUNTY' across the chest."

    ReplyDelete
  12. John Herndon in The Anderson News: "Most of the sports world is focused on the NCAA tournament this week but from this corner, it is only the second-best basketball tourney going on right now. It is a distant second to the greatest show in hoops, the Kentucky high school Sweet 16."

    ReplyDelete
  13. About now, I'm regretting the second fried pie.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Daviess Co. is going down. Rowan leads 35-19 with 2:12 to go in the 3d quarter.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Daviess Co. should have known there's only one "County" in Kentucky.

    ReplyDelete
  16. With Rowan County leading by 16 going into the fourth quarter, I've decided to beat the crowd and cut out to the Whitaker Bank Concourse for a smoothie and jumbo pretzel. I figure this is a reasonable lunch choice after the pie-bomb breakfast.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Rowan rolls to an easy 45-32 win over Daviess Co.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I spent most of the second half reading through my official program. Now I'm trying to figure out where I can watch the UK game.

  19. Perry County Central Commodores coach is Allan Hatcher, whom the Kentucky legislature honored in 2000 with HR 57, sponsored by Rep. Fred Nesler (D-Mayfield):

"A RESOLUTION adjourning the House of Representatives in honor of Coach Allan Hatcher.
"WHEREAS, Coach Allan Hatcher has been coaching boys basketball for over twenty years, and he is in his eighth year of coaching boys basketball at Graves County High School; he has led the Eagles to four regional titles and one runner-up, and he has compiled a 189-48 record while at Graves County High School; and
"WHEREAS, in his years of coaching boys basketball, Coach Hatcher has compiled a 510-145 career record, his 500th victory coming on December 14, 1999, with a win over Mayfield, and he also coached girls basketball at Graves County High School for two seasons, leading them to a 46-14 record and a Final 4 finish in the 1994-95 season; and
"WHEREAS, Coach Hatcher coached boys basketball for Marshall County High School, leading his teams to win four regional titles in the 1980's; and after leaving Marshall County, he became an assistant coach for both Western Kentucky and Morehead State Universities; and
"WHEREAS, Coach Hatcher is a graduate of Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, and his West Virginia team won the West Virginia State Championship title in 1983; and
"WHEREAS, Coach Hatcher is a loving husband to Penny Hatcher, and they have three sons, Mark, Chase, and Wes; and
    "WHEREAS, Coach Hatcher has won the respect and admiration of, and contributed to the development of, many outstanding and responsible young athletes;
    "NOW, THEREFORE,
"Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:
"Section 1. This honorable body hails and commends Coach Allan Hatcher for his contribution to young athletes in this Commonwealth. He has demonstrated strong character and is an element of invincible strength to all the lives he has touched.
"Section 2. When the House of Representatives adjourns this day, it does so in honor of Coach Allan Hatcher.
"Section 3. The Clerk of the House of Representatives is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Coach Allan Hatcher, Graves County High School, 1107 Housman Street, Mayfield, Kentucky."

    ReplyDelete
  20. Right now, commended Coach Hatcher and the Commodores trail Wayne County, 3-2.

    ReplyDelete
  21. OK, now we have a much better game. Wayne Co. leads Perry Co. 17-13 with 6:14 left in the 2d quarter.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Perry County Central back within two, 2:37 to go in the half ... playing a seventh-grader at guard ...

    ReplyDelete
  23. Baseball pass for layup, and it's 20-19, Perry Count Central, with 1:47 to play before halftime (and, for me, Dippin' Dots!)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Seventh-grader assists short jumper, and then Wayne responds with a three ... tied with a minute to go in second ...

    ReplyDelete
  25. Morehead State hits a three at the halftime buzzer, and the Eagles are tied with Louisville 33-all as the teams head into the locker room.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Perry Co. Central leads Wayne Co. 24-22 at the half, and now I am leaving the arena to find a TV.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I figure Cameron Mills (the iHigh.com color commentator) has to have gotten himself set up with a Blackberry or something.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Still going back and forth. Wayne Co. leads 34-31 with 2:46 left in the 3d quarter.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Wayne Co. leads 51-45 with 4:04 left in the game.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Wayne Co. is up 58-50 with 2:44 to go.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Louisville leads Morehead St. 48-44 with 8:51 to go.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Wayne Co. beats Perry Co. Cent. 68-58. Now everyone can go watch the UK game.

    ReplyDelete
  33. A very, very, VERY big day for Rowan County and its seat, Morehead.

    ReplyDelete
  34. This would have to be the happiest day in memory in Rowan County and Morehead, in fact ... boys' basketball team wins Sweet Sixteen opener, Morehead State upsets Louisville, and UK survives its own first-round game.

    ReplyDelete
  35. By the way, I will not be able to cover the night session, as I will be at Verizon Center watching the NC2A's.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Very good point about Rowan Co.

    ReplyDelete
  37. 27-19, Bullitt East over Bardstown, with 2:36 to play in the first half ...

If I had been in Lexington, I'd be getting back late because I would've waited until after UK's win to go eat Mr. Kan's Chinese (I love fried tofu) and then make a stop by Old Kentucky Chocolates. I'd have to share my chocolates with someone on press row to get their notes from the first half.

    ReplyDelete
  38. One of the coach's sons scores low, and Bardstown has tied Bullitt East with 6:30 to play ...

    ReplyDelete
  39. Bullitt East, 41-39, with the ball and 2:34 to go ...

    ReplyDelete
  40. North Hardin coach Ron Bevars just said on the KHSAA broadcast that the 1988 Bardstown team that James "Boo" Brewer played on was one of the best ever in Kentucky--but it lost in the semifinals of the regional tournament.

    ReplyDelete
  41. 43-40, Bullitt East, with the ball and less than two minutes to go ...

    ReplyDelete
  42. Layup and fouled ... 45-40 ... 1:51 ... heading to the line ...

    ReplyDelete
  43. Free-throw good, Bardstown scores quickly, and now it's 46-42 with 1:37 to play ... Bullitt East will have the ball after a timeout ...

    ReplyDelete
  44. 42.2 seconds, Bullitt East by seven ... Bardstown ball ...

    ReplyDelete
  45. Bullitt East completes its first-ever Sweet Sixteen win in the school's second appearance: 53-44. Hooray for Mount Washington.

    ReplyDelete
  46. 2:09 to go in the first quarter, and Marshall County is up, 5-4, on Bell County. All of the Marshalls' points have come from a reserve who averages six points a game.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Losing focus ... If I was there, I'd be considering a Papa John's personal pizza and a giant diet Coke to carry me through this last half of the last game.

Marshall County 13, Bell County 8, 3:51 to play in the second quarter ...

    ReplyDelete
  48. 3:28 to play, and the Marshals are about to send a little cheer down the airwaves to Benton ... up 19 ...

    ReplyDelete
  49. I loved hotels when I was a kid, and I still love them. The Marshals' home away from Benton this weekend is Lexington's Sleep Inn.

    ReplyDelete
  50. It's a wrap: 55-33, Marshall County!
