  1. The Courier-Journal's Jody Demling reports that a UK assistant coach was on hand to watch Monday's Bullitt East game in the Sixth Region to watch a 6-foot-8 sophomore.

  2. The Third Region tournament is weird. They play the quarter-final games at the home courts of the four district winners, and then the semi-finalists will go to Meade County (!) for the semi-finals and final.

Historically, the 3d Region has been dominated by Owensboro, but the Red Devils are only 14-13 this year. Daviess Co. and Muhlenberg Co. appear to be the favorites. Daviess Co. is 23-4, and Muhlenberg Co. is 22-5. When they met at Muhlenberg on February 12, Muhlenberg prevailed 75-65.

  3. Want to see that five-overtime Monroe County win over Allen County-Scottsville from the 15th District? Too bad, writes Cameron Smith with RivalsHigh.com.

  4. Jason Frakes (of the C-J) and Jerry Wyman both report that Male leads Seneca 8-7 at the end of the first quarter.

  5. Here are the last 10 teams to win the 7th region (which is basically the eastern half of Jefferson County):

    2010: Ballard (state finalist)
    2009: Eastern
    2008: Jeffersontown
    2007: Ballard (state finalist)
    2006: Jeffersontown (STATE CHAMPS)
    2005: Ballard
    2004: Trinity
    2003: Ballard (state finalist)
    2002: Male
    2001: Male (state finalist)

The fact that Ballard has lost in the state finals three times since 2003 is, to me, one of the most interesting facts about the state basketball tournament. Ballard's last state title was in 1999.

  6. Here are the last 10 teams to win the 3d region:

    2010: Muhlenberg Co.
    2009: Grayson Co.
    2008: Owensboro
    2007: Owensboro
    2006: Owensboro Apollo (state finalist)
    2005: Ohio Co.
    2004: Owensboro Apollo
    2003: Daviess Co.
    2002: Owensboro
    2001: Grayson Co.

The last team from the 3d region to win the state championship was Breckinridge County, which went all the way in 1995. Before that you have to go back to Owensboro in 1980.

  7. Here are the last 10 teams to win the 16th region, which also starts today:

    2010: East Carter
    2009: Elliott Co.
    2008: Elliott Co.
    2007: Elliott Co.
    2006: Russell
    2005: Rowan Co.
    2004: Morgan Co.
    2003: Rose Hill Christian
    2002: Ashland
    2001: Ashland

The last team from the 16th region to win the state title was Ashland. Larry Conley took them to the crown in 1961. Only two other regions (the 1st and the 14th) have gone longer without winning the title.

  8. Seneca (16-11) has jumped out to a 21-12 lead over Male (12-14) at the half.

  9. Sorry. I was wrong. Seneca led 21-12 at the end of the first quarter. It is now 30-22 Seneca with 4:53 left in the 2d quarter. My apologies to Jason Frakes and Jerry Wyman.

  10. The next game in the 7th region is Moore (23-6) v. Jeffersontown (23-6). That should be a barn-burner. Moore beat J-Town 61-56 on February 15th.

  11. Seneca is rolling at halftime. They lead Male 42-29.

  12. Seneca 51, Male 34 (5:20 left in 3d quarter)

  13. Male now making a run. Jason Frakes reports that Seneca has called time with a 58-46 lead and 1:10 left in the 3d quarter.

  14. Seneca 58, Male 48 (end of 3d)

  17. Jason Frakes, Jerry Wyman, and someone named mrBtoyou report that Seneca has beaten Male 86-73.

I don't think UK has scored 86 points in only 32 minutes all year.

Seneca moves on to play the winner of Moore v. Jeffersontown.

  18. Moore leads J-Town 14-11 after 1 quarter.

  19. Moore jumps out to a 19-11 lead over J-Town with five minutes left in the 2d quarter.

  20. Jason Frakes, Gzellad, and JohnLewisFOX41 are all tweeting that Moore leads J-Town 23-17 at the half.

  21. J-Town 37, Moore 31 (end of 3d quarter)

  22. J-Town 40, Moore 35 (5:09 left in 4th quarter)

    ReplyDelete
  23. J-Town 44, Moore 37 (2:31 left in 4th quarter)

J-Town has outscored Moore 27-14 so far in the second half.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Jason Frakes reports that Moore put on a tremendous push at the end, but came up just short, losing 51-49 to J-Town. A 55-footer by Moore at the buzzer was off the mark.

J-Town advances to play Seneca, which shouldn't be too hard for them.

Meanwhile, Eastern (28-2) and Ballard (28-3) -- the two top teams in the state -- will have to play each other in the other side of the regional bracket (once they win their games tonight. So J-Town is pretty fortunate in its draw.

  25. In the 7th region, Eastern jumped out to a 17-2 lead to open the game. The Eagles still lead Fern Creek 30-21 at the half.

  26. In the 16th region, Lewis Co. and Boyd Co. are tied at 49-all with 6:40 left in the 4th quarter.

  27. The Lewis Co.-Boyd Co. report came from Aaron Snyder, who tweets under the name "DindependentPG".

  28. DindependentPG reports that Boyd County leads Lewis County 60-59 with 1:02 left in the game.

    ReplyDelete
  29. And that's going to be my last comment for awhile, as I will be out of pocket until after the UK-Vandy game.

  30. Eastern beat Fern Creek 75-60

    Ballard beat Lou. Collegiate 68-35.

The number 1 and 2 teams in the state will meet Friday night in the round of 64.

    ReplyDelete
  31. DindependentPG reports that Lewis County beat Boyd County 63-60, as Justin McCann hit a three-pointer at the buzzer.

    ReplyDelete
  32. In the other 16th region contest, Rowan Co. (25-5) beat West Carter (21-9) by a score of 68-58. So they will take on Lewis Co. next.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Also, here are the scores from the 3d Region:

Breckinridge Co. (19-6) beats Edmonson Co. (17-9) 53-46.

Daviess Co. (24-4) has a harder time than expected, but beats Ohio Co. (15-13) 58-52.

Owensboro (15-13) wins at Grayson Co. (16-14) by the score of 59-58.

I can't find any result for the game between heavily-favored Muhlenberg Co. and Meade Co.
