This 1986 release, coming in at number 98 on the Best of the 80's list, marked a big change for a band who had been essentially a noise, performance art band up to this point. On EVOL they began to incorporate rock into the mix and began immediately having a big impact on the music to come. You can't listen to EVOL and not think of the influence this album had on people like Billy Corgan and Kurt Cobain.
This is not Sonic Youth's best work, but it was an evolution for them and a change that would bring them to some big success later on. As we've talked about a lot of albums are picked on lists like this because of their influence, this album definitely fits that bill.
Let's say it's Saturday. A beautiful sunny day, but your mood is a dark storm. Put some headphones on and go for a walk with this album playing and you won't be disappointed.
Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 2 out of 5 stars for Not Bad.
I did not like this song.
ReplyDeleteWhat a different world it must be to grow up at Concord Elementary School, Heath Middle School and Heath High School today than it was 1975-86. I didn't start watching 120 Minutes until after I went away to college, so I just had zero clue that any music that sounded like this was out there.
