Best of the 70's: Rock Bottom by Robert Wyatt

Rock BottomComing in at number 74 on the Best of the 70's list is this 1974 release from Robert Wyatt.  As a rule I don't care much for art rock and this one does nothing to break that rule.

This album gets praise for how Wyatt stepped back from the noise of the current progressive and art rock and created a very stripped down, very paced effort.  There is a lot of focus on the lyrics and the construction of the songs.

I get all of this and perhaps it took something like this to help The Cure years later record songs like "Plainsong" on Disintegration, or maybe Beck with his album Sea Change.  That being said it's still not something I'm going to ever listen to again.

If you like art rock or are just interested in listening to albums that are considered to be very important in rock history, then throw this one on.

Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 1 out of 5 stars for Just OK.

  1. Miles Davis's "Right Off, Pt. 1" is probably my favorite song/composition/whatever of this ilk. It reminds me of a big, fancy car going down an empty road.
