Best of the 70's: Bryter Layter by Nick Drake

Bryter LayterComing in at number 80 on the Best of the 70's list this is the first of two Nick Drake albums on the list.

I've never quite gotten the whole Nick Drake thing, but I know some people who love his stuff and when I hear a song like "One of These First Things" I can understand how this sound can work. Of course I shouldn't knock on Drake. He's had a huge influence on this current flock of singer songwriters like Josh Rouse or Ray LaMontagne. In fact I picked a LaMontagne song as my favorite song a few years back, and I'm a fan of quite a few of these guys. Well at least a fan of songs. I guess the thing is when it works for me on a song it really works, otherwise I can sort of leave it.

One thing though about this album is that it would fit with almost anything you are doing. This would be a great album to play on your first trip to the beach since you started dating the girl who use to be your best friend.

Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 2 out of 5 stars for Not Bad.

  1. This song was a common element in the waning days of my bachelorhood. I'll bet I've listened to it and love the song 200 times--and never once paid a lick of attention to the lyrics.

  2. Yeah that's a good point. I think a lot of Nick Drake is all about the mood he creates more than the lyrics. That's why his stuff works great in TV commercials.
