Best of the 70's: Blue by Joni Mitchell

BlueComing in at number 23 on the Best of the 70's list is an album that has always confounded me.  Knowing how highly thought of this album is I have listened to it many times and have never once enjoyed it.

I don't know what it is with me and this album, but it just doesn't work for me.  Certainly I can see the influence of this record on people like Kate Bush for instance, but I would put Bush's The Kick Inside ahead of this anytime.

This album is tailor made for a cold rainy day.

Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 1 out of 5 stars for Just OK.

  1. Love this record. Near-constant heavy rotation for 20 years now. Especially love her lyrics on "A Case of You."

  2. Eric, why don't you explain to us why this record is ranked so highly?

  3. Oh, I don't know ... do you like it, too? I think it's a really pretty thing to listen to from top to bottom, and I think she's an interesting writer. I imagine that some people agree. But I also imagine that some people are turned off by her peculiar vocal style, and there are folks who probably don't like the politics or preciousness of her lyrics. None of that stuff bothers me. I think this record is a really honest gift and product of her talents, and it, by and large, jibes with my palate. That would pretty much be my assessment of any record that I like.
