In 1970 the Grateful Dead put out two albums Workingman's Dead and American Beauty. They are both heavily influenced by bluegrass and blues, but while Workingman's Dead is raw and rough American Beauty is clean and precise.
Personally I much prefer Workingman's Dead and would highly recommend it. That being said American Beauty is considered the classic Dead album and so it is no surprise to find it sitting at number 50 on the Best of the 70's list.
This album will fit most any mood with it's laid back sound and approach. I think it would be a great travel album when you really want to talk with your travel companions.
Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 2 out of 5 stars for Not Bad.
The studio version of "Friend of the Devil," which I had never heard, is excellent.
