Bellarmine 51 - 48 BYU-Hawaii (15:47 left in 2d half)
BYU-Hawaii is led by Jet Chang, a Taiwanese player who is outstanding. He had 43 points in the semi-finals, he has 26 points already in this game, and he is the reason that the Seasiders (who were a 7 seed in this tournament) have pulled upset after upset on their way to the final.

Bellarmine 63 - 58 BYU-Hawaii (6:51 left in 2d half)
As you can see, there has been very little scoring. Both teams just sort scrambling all over the place and taking a lot of bad shots. The Knights had taken an 8-point lead, but the Seasiders just hit a three to cut it to five.
Bellarmine 66 - 60 BYU-Hawaii (3:36 left in 2d half)
To be honest, I have no idea how this is going to turn out. BYU-Hawaii switched to a zone at about the 10-minute mark, and Bellarmine apparently has no clue of how to attack a zone. They just pass the ball around for about 30 seconds, and then someone shoots a 3. This has not been very effective.
But BYU-Hawaii has taken a lot of dumb shots on their end as well.
Anyway, Jet Chang (33 points) will be going to the line for BYU-Hawaii when we come back from commercial.
By the way, the decision to play the D-2 championships (which are almost always dominated by schools from out in the middle of nowhere) in Springfield, Massachusetts has to rank as one of the worst of the many bad decisions made by the NCAAs. They always end up with these really tiny crowds -- because who can get to Springfield, Mass? And who would want to?
Bellarmine 68 - 65 BYU-Hawaii (55 seconds left in 2d half)
BYU-Hawaii had two chance to take the lead, and ended up with two turnovers. Finally, one of the Bellarmine players decided to actually dribble the ball toward the basket, on the theory that short shots are easier than long shots. He scored.
Bellarmine 68 - 65 BYU-Hawaii (23.3 seconds left in 2d half)
I nave never seen anything like this. BYU-Hawaii comes down, tries to get the ball to Chang, Bellarmine steals it.
The ball is knocked out of bounds. When Bellarmine tries to in-bound, a BYU-Hawaii guy bangs into the Knight player, causing him to slip. Walking!
BYU-Hawaii gets the ball down 3, and commits another turnover. Bellarmine tries to in-bound, and throws it away. But then BYU-Hawaii commits another turnover. Foul. Knights going to the line.
BYU-Hawaii throws a long in-bounds pass into the front court. Wild scramble for the ball. Finally, with no time left, a Seasider hurls the ball way over the backboard.
Game over: BELLARMINE WINS THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.

By the way, BYU-Hawaii's team colors are red and white. It seems totally odd to me that they would have different colors from the main BYU team.

ReplyDeleteHey, the radio announcers just said that next year the D-2 championships will move to Louisville! Good job, NCAA!

ReplyDeleteBellarmine makes one of two FTs. Jet Chang races down, shoots a wild shot in the lane -- it's blocked. Bellarmine gets the rebound and is fouled.
What a mess the ending of this game has been.
Bellarmine at the line.

Second FT: good.
