I've heard of this band for the past decade but have never given them a listen. After listening to this album I'm not sure that the alt country tag fits them. I'm not sure why they aren't considered an indie band like Wilco. In many ways they feel more influenced by Wilco or the Grateful Dead than any country artists.
Anyhow I'm intrigued by their sound enough that I'll be giving some of their other stuff a listen. I'm intrigued by the album Southern Rock Opera, which is apparently a double album paying tribute to Southern rock bands and of course the South. But that would be another review, let's talk about this album.
This is a collection of bluesy, fairly quiet love songs. Not all happy love of course, how do you think they get the alt country tag, but still they are lyrically fun and interesting. Musically it's a pretty mild approach and it works well with their songs.
If you want some nice country inspired rock then give this a listen. I mean these guys are the darlings of alt country and so I suppose anyone should pay them some mind.
Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 2 out of 5 stars for Not Bad.
I often do want some nice country-inspired rock, so thanks for the tip.
