I think one of the trickier things to do in jazz is interpret well loved songs. A really good interpretation, like "All or Nothing at All" on John Coltrane's Ballads, enhances the song you love by bringing out new depths to the song. A bad interpretation is one where the musicianship gets ahead of the song or where there is no interpretation just a replaying of the song in a way that brings nothing new to the table.
This being a Disney jazz collection it is of course made up of well loved songs, and is made up of some real misses. There are a few good songs here but too many bad ones. Mostly the misses are songs where over zealous musicians overwhelm the songs. The version of "Gaston" on this album has to be one of my most hated pieces of music of all time.
If you want some jazz in the background this isn't a bad fit because you'll catch so many of the melodies.
Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 1 out of 5 stars for Just OK.
This review is a triumph.
