I'll be up front with the fact that I'm not a big Lucinda Williams fan. Her voice really grates on me for some reason. That being said she is incredibly consistent.
She is consistent in not only solid productions and songwriting but also in content. She's famous for her bitter love songs and in that sense this album takes Lucinda Williams in a different direction. Recently married Williams seems to be looking at the world through different eyes and brings her solid songwriting to a variety of topics.
Don Was produced this album and she gets some guest on here like Elvis Costello with an angry guitar solo on "Seeing Black." Musically she's following her usual path and Was does a great job of giving her voice and her band a solid sound.
Like I said I'm not a big Williams fan, but if you are then you'll like this album, and I'm very happy to see her moving in other directions with her songwriting.
Like most Williams albums this album would fit well on a Saturday afternoon after spending the morning working.
Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 2 out of 5 stars for Not Bad.
I love Lucinda Williams, and I like this song a great deal. So hooray! And thanks.
ReplyDeleteA friend of mine was in a features editor at The Herald-Leader several years ago (while I was still single) when Lucinda Williams was in town. Kelli got to meet Lucinda Williams after the concert and told her about me and my crush on her. Alas, Lucinda Williams's boyfriend shows up, and Kelli said he looked a lot like me. This made me feel really terrific. I got an autograph out of the deal with some funny note that I can't remember at the moment.
Anyway, I wonder if she ended up marrying that guy. Hope so.
Man, that's a good song.
