Bullitt East should be the favorite here -- they are 25-5 for the year and 13-1 in regional games. But they will find it difficult to beat three Louisville teams in Louisville. Iroquois, for example, is 19-9 overall and 12-3 in the region -- they actually beat Bullitt East 72-70 in overtime on January 4.
My dark horse is Central. The Yellowjackets are only 15-9, but they have won 6 of their last 8, losing only to Ballard and J-Town in that stretch. And a few years ago, Central had a very similar record and they went all the way to the state finals, where they lost to Covington Holmes in double OT. My guess is that Central relies on a lot of guys from their state-championship football team, so it takes them a while to get going.
Hooray to you for chiming in here. My knowledge of KHSAA basketball this season is confined pretty much to what you've posted over the last few months.
PRP beats Shawnee 77-54. I should have mentioned PRP as a serious threat before. They are now 20-8, and they have won seven games in a row. They will play Butler next, and they beat Butler 71-53 on February 11. So they appear likely to reach the regional final.
For your background, here are the last 10 teams to win the 6th Region (which basically includes the west side of Jefferson County plus Bullitt County):
2010: Butler 2009: Central 2008: Central 2007: Fairdale 2006: PRP 2005: PRP 2004: PRP 2003: Iroquois 2002: Butler 2001: Fairdale
The last team from the 6th Region to win the state title was Fairdale, which won the crown in 1990, 1991, and 1994. PRP won the title in 1989.
Western is a magnet school focused on math, science, and technology. Central offers 10 magnet programs focused on different career paths. I would think that this deal would give Central an advantage in sports, but it hasn't played out so far.
Meanwhile, Notre Dame is just destroying Villanova, 51-29 with 17:43 left in the game. The Irish made 11 three-pointers in the first half. I'm glad they didn't shoot like that against us.
WESTERN PULLS OUT THE VICTORY! Jerry Wyman tells us that the final score was 64-64. steve page1 comments that Deangelo Russell of Central missed a shot at the buzzer to give Western the victory.
So my dark horse pick goes down. Central finishes with a record of 15-10. Western improves to 17-11 and they will await the winner of Bullitt East (25-5) and Iroquois (19-9).
That should be another great game. Iroquois beat Bullitt East 72-70 in overtime on January 4.
Jody Demling fills us in on what happened at the end of the Central-Western game. With 57 seconds to go, Central was up 63-57. Western scored to make it 63-59. Then, with 22.2 seconds left, Western hit a three to make it 63-62. With 11.7 seconds left, Ryan Taylor of Western stole the ball and hit a jump shot to put the Warriors up 64-63. Central missed the last shot, and Western won the game.
Iroquois is another "Magnet Career Academy," like Central. Here is its Vision Statement:
"Iroquois High School will prepare students for life by teaching them how to create their own destiny through C.O.R.E. (Consistency, Ownership, Relationships, and Expectations)."
I'm pretty sure they stole that from Dunder-Mifflin.
Here is the Iroquois Mission Statement:
"Iroquois High School will build student self-sufficiency emphasizing C.O.R.E. in Smaller Learning Communities, Advocacy, Mastery Learning and Professional Learning Communities."
I have literally no idea what that means.
Here's another statement from their web page:
"Iroquois High School Magnet Career Academy provides a unique Construction Technology Program as its Magnet. Construction Technology offers a dynamic combination of technical and academic programs designed to meet the individual needs of students. All students enrolled in the Construction Technology {sic} are expected to complete the precollege curriculum in order to expand options upon graduation. Students enrolled in the Construction Technology Program invest their time developing marketable skills in high-demand areas such as brick and block masonry, building maintenance, carpentry, architectural drafting, electrical wiring, heating and air conditioning, interior design, plumbing, and welding."
I think that means that the students in that program basically just take shop.
Meanwhile, here's the Mission Statement for Bullitt East:
"Our Mission at Bullitt East High School is to empower our students with the ability to reason, solve problems and acquire knowledge to maximize each student's individual potential. A rigorous and relevant curriculum, taught by a well-trained, dedicated and relationship-minded staff, will be the cornerstone of our school. Our mission is to accomplish this as we serve our students, parents, and community."
They should seriously consider cutting the last two sentences of that statement, because they simply confuse things.
Iroquois will have to go back to the drawing board. Despite their Vision Statement and their Mission Statement, the Iroquois team lost to Bullitt East by a score of 64-59. BEHS runs its record to 26-5, and they will meet Western in the regional semi-finals.
This is great! I was thinking of writing something about how we are down to the round of 128, and you've already recognized that fact.
ReplyDeleteI am really excited about the Regionals this year.

My dark horse pick is not looking good so far. Western leads Central 17-11 after one quarter.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I want to give a shout-out to Jody Demling of the C-J, who is tweeting from the 6th Region playoffs.
ReplyDeleteCentral and Western played on January 28th at Central, and the Yellowjackets (that's Central) pulled out a 65-63 victory.
ReplyDeleteWestern is a magnet school focused on math, science, and technology. Central offers 10 magnet programs focused on different career paths. I would think that this deal would give Central an advantage in sports, but it hasn't played out so far.
ReplyDeleteThe math kids are still winning. Western leads Central 34-27 at the half.
ReplyDeleteWestern leads Central 50-44 after three quarters. Thanks to Jerry Wyman, who is also tweeting from the game.
ReplyDeleteSteve Page1, by the way, tweets that the Central-Western game is "2 fast 4" the officials from the Fifth Region who are working the game.
ReplyDeleteJason Frakes re-tweets (from Jody Demling) that Western leads Central 54-50 with 4:15 left in the game.
ReplyDeleteNow Jerry Wyman reports that Central has taken the lead, 58-56 with 1:24 left to play.
ReplyDeleteAnd this is only the first day of Regional action!
ReplyDeleteCentral 59, Western 56 with 1:07 left in game.

There was a typo in the last comment. Jerry Wyman -- who is a much better typist than I am -- said that the final score was 64-63.

ReplyDeleteIT'S FEBRUARY MADNESS IN KENTUCKY!!!
YEAH!
ReplyDeleteJody Demling reports that Bullitt East leads Iroquois 15-13 after one quarter.
ReplyDeleteJerry Wyman reports that it was a "wild" first quarter.

I may start trying to implement Consistency, Ownership, Relationships and Expectations in my own life.
ReplyDeleteJerry Wyman reports that Bullitt East leads 27-26 at the half.
ReplyDeleteI wonder which part of C.O.R.E. Iroquois needs to improve?
