I spent the night of February 20, 1986 in a car riding from Nashville, Tennessee to Charlottesville, Virginia, where I was going to compete in a college bowl tournament. We left Nashville at 6 PM on February 20 and pulled in to our hotel in Charlottesville at around 5 AM the next morning. As soon as I walked into the hotel, I picked up that morning's USA Today -- and saw the big headlines discussing Maryland's big upset. I was extremely happy.
My favorite Super Bowl experience came from listening to it on the radio. My favorite Daytona 500 experience came from listening on the radio. My favorite UK basketball experience came from listening on the radio. The radio kills TV for almost all sports.

ReplyDeleteAnd we won the college bowl tournament.
That's a great piece of sportswriting.
