I find this really interesting. If you go to the official Thompson Square web site you will find no mention of their first debut album back in 2007 for Sixgun Records. Even when I checked Wikipedia there was no mention of the album. I added it. If you listen to that 2007 debut and compare that to their 2011 debut it is interesting to hear the differences.
Personally I prefer the more stripped down and personal sound of their 2007 debut, but Shawna Thompson has become a much better singer since 2007 and so the 2011 debut has that going for it. Personally I would love to hear her now behind that more stripped down sound. You get tastes of it on songs like "Glass" where you can really hear her sing without the overproduced Nashville buzz going on behind her.
I gripe a lot about the Nashville sound and I know I tend to go a bit overboard. What is interesting though is when you hear a couple like the Thompsons plugged into it you know why it works. You get two people who know how to sing with real emotion behind their words and the whole sound really comes alive.
If you want some good contemporary country music throw this album on.
Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 2 out of 5 stars for Not Bad. I would recommend getting their first album over this one.
Maybe it's a different band with the same name?
ReplyDeleteNo!! Both albums are "Thompson Square" but both are amazing albums!! They are different, but so very awesome at the same time.. Agree with you on Shawna's vocals being beautiful.. but loved them even back them with Keeping Up With The Joneses being My fav off that album completely :)
