Are you a fan of Joy Division? If so then you will probably like White Lies. It's incredible how influenced their sound is from the post-punk stuff of the 80s. In some ways the album feels almost overly retro. Not only do you have the post-punk components but then you feel influences from people like Massive Attack, My Bloody Valentine, etc. The album feels like it is lost in time somehow if you lived through all of this music.
In some ways that made the album a bit hard to get into for me. I think the first two times through I was so thrown off by the retro sound that I actually didn't focus much on the quality of the songs. It wasn't until the third time through that I actually pulled back enough to hear the songs for what they are and realized that this is a very solid album. Brooding pop tunes that are blending a whole host of past influences very effectively.
I would play this one on a dreary day while walking to work. If I were 19, in college, living off campus, and working at Wendy's, then I'd play this on the weekend after getting home from work, before going out with friends.
Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 3 out of 5 stars for Pretty Good.
