Album Review: Kaputt by Destroyer

KaputtA throw back to the 80's and bands like The Pet Shop Boys and New Order this album has its moments but in the end fails to come together.

The first time I put this album on I was immediately drawn to the sound of the album, as I have fond memories of the 80's pop music it is referencing, but as the album played I found myself losing interest.  By the third listen I realized that though it was a good effort the songs just weren't there to make this album work.  By my fifth listen I realized that it's mixing its reference too much.  I hold any 80's throwback effort up to Gwen Stefani's Love, Angel, Music, Baby.  What made that album work so well was that she didn't mix 80's references together but mixed them with modern touches.  So though the album is eclectic, because the references are different for each tune, it works because they are all throwbacks to the 80's and their held together by the modern touches.  On this album you are getting too many sounds from the 80's pulled into one and it just doesn't quite work.

This would be a good album for a late night drive.

Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 2 out of 5 stars for Not Bad.
