With all the attention Coach K has gotten recently for moving to number 2 on the all-time wins list, I got to thinking about how UK has done during Coach K's years in Durham. What is the difference between Duke -- which has benefited from Coach K's efforts over the last three decades -- and UK, which has had six different coaches over the same period?
Coach K took over at the beginning of the 1980-81 season, so I compared Duke's and UK's performance since that time. Here's what I learned:
Duke has gone 810-221, for a winning percentage of 0.786, and 4 national championships.
UK has gone 772-245, for a winning percentage of 0.759, and 2 national championships.
In other words, after 30 years with Coach K, Duke has gained only 38 wins and two national titles on UK.
I realize that those extra wins -- and especially the extra titles -- have caused a great deal of angst for UK fans. But it's amazing to think that we've come so close to keeping up with one of the greatest coaches of all time.
Plus, we didn't get help from the officials or Dukie V.
This is a perfect example of how Coach Calipari's worrying has freed you to focus on the bright side. I love it!
