Pennant Fever

This weekend, English football is dominated by the third round of the F. A. Cup. But I wanted to point out that Manchester United effectively wrapped up the title earlier this week. In the last round of games over the holidays, Man Utd beat Stoke 2-1, Arsenal and Man City fought to a 0-0 draw, Chelsea lost at Wolverhampton 1-0, and Spurs lost at Everton 2-1. In other words, Man Utd gained ground on all of their nearest competitors, giving them a solid lead as we move into the second half of the year:

1. Man Utd: 12-0-8 (44 pts)
2. Man City: 12-4-6 (42 pts)
3. Arsenal: 12-5-4 (40 pts)
4. Spurs: 10-5-6 (36 pts)
5. Chelsea: 10-6-5 (35 pts)
6. Sunderland: 8-5-9 (33 pts)

The most interesting story left in the season is whether Chelsea can halt its free-fall and climb back into the all-important top four in order to win a slot in next year's Champions' League.
