Kentucky Minute: Happy anniversary to me

Well, my wife and I got married seven years ago almost to the hour, and it's fantastic. I loved my life before I got married at 35, but, man, oh, man, never has there been a man more built for marriage than me--life's even better now. This is not to say, of course, that it's at all what I've come to realize that I was expecting, but, whatever. It's great. I'm so thankful for her. She so frequently saves me from myself. Right now, she's flipping through some Pottery Barn or Restoration Hardware or Four-hundred-dollar Coffee Table catalog, dog-earing pages, making me nervous and antsy with talk of what color we might repaint this room or that room and blahblahblah ... hey, it's hard to explain but great. I love being married, and I especially love it that I'm married to my wife.

We're in Owensboro. I've spent a lot of my life not much caring for Owensboro, but it grows on me a little more every time I visit now. We're at some downtown coffee shop, having eaten at a Greek restaurant across the street. We walked in and out of various art and trinket shops before we finally sat down to eat. It's really, really cold here. This is about as city as you can get in western Kentucky, and it's nice to be here. We feel like we're a long way from home, which is only 45 minutes away. The coffee shop has played Cake, Carole King and Dave Matthews Band since we arrived.

I see that UK trailed a lot of the first half against Penn but now leads, 33-32. Cliff Hagan is from Owensboro. So is another of Dime Magazine's all-time UK dream team, but I can't remember which one. Ralph Beard, maybe?

Hooray for my wife! Hooray for basketball! Hooray for scatter-brained frivolity!

  1. "China Girl" by David Bowie ... so good. Josh Harrelson 12 points, 11 rebounds, six blocks and zero personal fouls.

  3. Congratulations, Eric!

I, too, have never felt very comfortable with Owensboro, and I would be interested in your thoughts as to why Owensboro feels different from Paducah.

  4. By the way, Ralph Beard played for Louisville Male.

  5. The only other UK great from Owensboro I can find is King Rex.

  6. Oh, of course, it was Rex Chapman. How did I forget him? Man, that guy was a GREAT college-basketball player.
